Has anyone found need for a heat shield between the 912UL muffler and the firewall blanket on a KF IV?
I've just run my engine for the first time after 24 years of building and got to thinking about the heat from the muffler.
thanks guys,

Mine just has some very thick aluminum foil or sheet glued on the blanket near the muffler and exhaust. 1991 Kitfox 3 912 1100 hrs.

I made mine out of aluminum. The best picture's here.
(https://b-and-n.smugmug.com/Flying/Kitfox/i-pt2sjSB/A) There's some
other views in the folder, though none as good. I don't know if it's
necessary. I did it to keep heat off the radiator tubes that run
vertically on centerline between the exhaust and firewall.

Guy,
I made the mistake of opening the link to the photo of the FWF
installation in your last post. All I can do is sigh and wish I had your
skills and attention to detail.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL INSTALLATION!
However, questions come to mind.
1. Is the oil cooler and mount a stock Kitfox or Rotax assembly. If so can
you give me P/N or help identifying it to get it ordered? I have a model
IV with round cowl around an 80 hp 912 and installed a smaller cooler
obtained from Kitfox about 10 years ago that lets temps get too high on
long hot climb outs from Utah canyons so I need more cooling at those
times.
2. I would like to replace the flexible rubber hose coolant line that goes
down the left side of my fire wall, then under the cabin floor to the
radiator because it is too close to the exhaust and the soft lines tend
not to stay in place as well as metal would. So where did you get or have
your chromed coolant lines made? Your guidance would be appreciated.
I better quit looking at your photo. Being so envious of another man's
work is depressing.

BJ,
You're too kind. Thanks for the nice words. Re:
- The oil cooler is an Earl's 21608AERL 16 Row Oil Cooler -8 AN Black I bought off Amazon. It's much larger than is typically used on 912's because of my southwest location. (Lots 'o hot.) The mount was custom, as was the cowl mod. I'm guessing Kitfox LLC can sell you a cooler and mount, but the catalog's ambiguous as to whether a mount is included. Give them a call. Later I made a Van's style shutter over the front which seems to work OK to help raise oil temperatures in the cold. I don't know if it blocks too much in the summer yet, though.
- The metal coolant lines were all custom, starting with a bunch of 1" mandrel bent aluminum elbows, (see this and that,) combined with some 1" straight that I had a local guy weld together after I did all the cutting and matching. I then beaded them and had them chromed locally. Unfortunately it was rather (shall we say hideously) expensive, mostly because I didn't feel comfortable welding aluminum. (OK with steel.) But I figured they'd last nearly forever and I definitely preferred them to soft tubing.
