I have checked the archives and did find some discussion on O2 systems, but
before I put down over 6K for an EDS-4ip system from Mountain High I wanted
to give the group a shot to tell me I am making a mistake. Am I?
I will be flying out of Ogden Ut and my wife does not handle more than 15
minutes above 9000 and most places we go require flying above 9K (IFR they
all do).
I will be doing my own filling, so would like a system with very good
endurance so I don't run out on long trips. I have a portable system now
that barely covers one leg on most of my trips in the old 182.
Fire away if you have an opinion.
Also, anyone installed one in a RV-10 yet would want to give me some
pointers.

I don't have a real opinion ....... but a caution for those filling
|
their own tanks. Here's a link to pictures and text of what happened to
a guy that was filling his own dive tanks.

Considering your personal situation, it sounds really reasonable.
I'm not sure if that's the exact same system Randy installed, but
he has a Mountain High electronic pulse system, and it works
fantastic for him. He has it semi-permanent installed behind the
baggage bulkhead, so it can be filled easily without bottle removal.
From what he told me in the past, he's really happy with it.
I myself bought a portable system, but if I was using it as much
as you sound like you will, I'd permanent mount it....and in fact
I may do just that in the winter when I do my condition inspection.
Glad to hear you're doing your own filling. I just happened to
have 4 300cu.ft. storage bottles laying around. 2 I had converted
to Helium for mixed gas scuba diving fills. I'm now converting
one of those 2 back to Oxygen service and I'll have a 3-bottle
system to fill from in my hanger. If anyone is needing O2
on the way in to OSH, I may be able to help you on that one.
I guess I'm a fan of high up-front cost and the rewards of long-term
savings.
Oh, and I caught Linn's post just before hitting Send. Scary
stuff if you don't do it right. I've personally witnessed
the effects of adiabatic compression ignited oxygen fires,
so I can vouch for there being real hazards. That said, if you
use good O2 cleaned equipment, and use it slowly and properly,
there isn't really much to worry about for the most part.
In general, you're probably much less safe refueling your plane,
or even worse....your car, but that's IF you use proper
procedures.

Thanks Tim.
As far as the filling the tanks myself......I am less worried about me doing
it than the three stooges from the local FBO. With my portable system I can
hand them the bottle and let them go off in a corner by themselves, but with
my RV-10 they would have to come to my hanger and try to destroy everything
I had worked on.....
I will take a chance on myself.

Cleanliness and common sense go a long way to years of successful O2
replenishment. The picture provided, showed a former garage converted
into a bedroom living area. It is surprising the number of electrical
devices, other combustion sources and hydrocarbons which can self ignite
in the close presence of 100% rather than 20.6% oxygen/nitrogen.
It amazes me the stupidity of smokers who do not extinguish when
refueling propane tanks at the supply tank - oxygen is even more
important. Something as simple as a greasy rag or dirty wrench can
trigger the process. Want to bet the supply tank was not the required
distance from combustible sources? Just follow common sense and I am
confident you will become as proficient as Tim and as fortunate as
Randy.
If you need to, I will forward you the entire chapter on O2 from my A &
P schooling.

Rene,
This is a very interesting question. Just this past Saturday before my CC
flight one of our squadron pilots told me how awesome an EDS system is and
how it does everything for you including reminding you to breath. For past
five years I have been running a manual nasal canula and have never had a
problem adjusting or forgetting to adjust the O2 levels.
This last saturday's flight gliding, was a good one going over 350NM and up
to class A airspace. The next day's drive home, I spoke to another one of
our pilots who flew and he told me that his internal battery on his EDS
failed and he needed to stay lower on the last 1/3rd of his flight. I
thought about my previous conversation the day before and wondered what
could fail in my system.
Just my thoughts...many times, simple is better.

I don't have an internal battery on my system. He must have a portable
system. The power on my oxy system comes through a standard breaker.
Filling the tank has been non-issue. You fill it so infrequently, like
once a year so far, that having someone else fill it while you are
standing there isn't a big deal.
