Anyone ordered the new version of Proseal from Van's lately and found the dispenser on the store?  I cannot locate one on there and Aircraft Spruce wants like $80 for it, when it is nothing more than a small plunger caulk gun?   What have others done?

Thanks
Jeff

I have used a ziplock bag with a hole. I have also found syringes
from fiberglass supply stores that come in handy. You can store the
unused syringes in your freezer for later use.

We just used a standard caulk gun.  It was a little tight, but it fit and worked great.

Hi Jeff,

I found it under the “new products” section of Van’s web store. However, I’m going with the syringes and cake decorator bags.

On Vans web store, Tank Sealant Dispenser, Part Number = TOOL SEALANT
GUN for $17.00. Dispenser for tank and firewall sealant. Works with
MC-236B1/2 and MC-CS-1900 sealant cartridges. A convenient and simple
way to apply these sealants.

I used an inexpensive caulking gun. I had to reduce the diameter of the plunger a little on my belt sander. It cost a $1.95 and I threw it away insted of removing the cartridge and cleaning it up.

I did the same and my caulk gun fit in the new self mixing cartridge with no adjustments needed.  There was nothing on the back end to clean up. I found a HUGE amount of waste doing the rudder this way, as the entire tube gets mixed and then you only use a little.

Is there a suitable substitute, like JB Weld for the elevators and other parts that use proseal??? I dont want to use anything that would cause corrosion for the trailing edge pieces.

For the fuel tank i will stick with the Proseal, and would expect to finish a tube or two.

Jeff,
I noticed the same thing. I live about 2 miles from Aircraft Spruce in
Peachtree City, so I drove over to get some. I showed them the Van's
catalog and asked if they carried it. They gave me the exact same stuff
that was in the picture. It's called ChemSeal - I think (I'm not home
right now). It's basically a caulk tube. I know that I didn'[t pay $80
for it, but I can't recall how much. Worked fine and the tube is in my
freezer for future use.

Steve,

You may want to reconsider the tubes for the tanks. I used two tubes, one for each baffle, the last step of building the tanks. Get the can and save yourself some time and money. I found that doing a few ribs at a time to be the perfect pace for the cure time involved. The tubes will cure before you can get all the ribs coated and riveted in place. By using the canned stuff you can do one rib at a time. Take your time and clean up a bit after each rib. Fresh proseal is much better to use than stuff that is about to kick off. I used large paper plates, small popscicle sticks to mix and large ones to apply. mix up an ounce (in weight) per rib. This give you enough to coat the flange and run a nice bead around the insdie after you rivet it in place. I was set on the tubes until I found out how much was being wasted. They have a place, just not economical or really any easier to use than the canned stuff mixed in small batches. Trust me, if you think your going to be neat and apply with surgical precision forget it. The first time you reach inside the tank to buck a rivet and your armpit and ribcage comes out smeared with proseal you'll see what I mean. Plus you'll need it to seal the firewall, NACA vents and other small areas in the fuselage.

At the airline, we use between 6  to 15 – 6oz tubes of Proseal per day.  I will start scavenging empty ProSeal tubes  (with nozzles) and bring them to OSH.  You guys can have them.  They are great receptacles for hand mixed ProSeal.  They can also be used for RTV.  With either a$1.99 cheapo ratchet gun or a surplus pneumatic SEMCO gun at $20.00 you should all overcome this shortfall.

Once the ProSeal sets, it can be pulled out of the cartridge and it can be reused – over and over and over.

I used J B Weld on my rudder and it didn't hold despite roughing the surface with steel wool then cleaning with acetone before clecoing together.

I recommend 3M Marine Adhesive 5200 Fast Cure (2 hrs).  It is white and only approx. $6 for an 8-ounce tube.  Should be enough for all the trailing edges of the rudder and control surfaces, NACA vents, etc.  You can also store the unused portion in the fridge and it will keep almost indefinitely.

This is STRONG stuff.  Once it sets, you will have to grind it off or use a chisel to break the bond.  The 3M 5200 also comes in a 24 HR version for a slower cure.  Find it at any good hardware store or Marine parts store.
