Is it possible to remove the front floor covers without removing the
weld mounts for the landing gear on a QB fuse? Tim Olson I noticed your
photos show you removed for insulation. Can you share how? Anyone else
have ideas?

It sure doesn't look like it to me. I have been held up because of this. I
had some temporary landing gear built with some pipe and some cheapie
wheelbarrow tires. They are shorter than the real thing so the fuse will sit
nice and low and I will still be able to roll it around the shop. I was
hoping to put them on for easy access to the forward fuselage while I
finished it up. After looking at it for a bit I realized I could not put in
the trunions until I found a willing bucking bar man to go inside the
forward fuse to finish up the transition from the sides to the bottom of the
airplane...the part you have to prebend. OK done. I have to say it fits
perfectly....really great engineering. Now I can snap down those floors, put
in the landing gear trunions and get the whole works off of the sawhorses
down to a reasonable working height. Cheers..

I did remove mine, but I also removed the gear mounts. Then insulated,
then re-installed.

Tom,

I don't know about your QB fuselage but mine had the landing gear bracket
fully bolted in with no reason to pull it out (yes the two front outboard
nutplates were already installed). I did drill out enough of the rivets in
the front floor covers to pull it up by the corner and slide insulation
underneath. The two outboard most row of rivets (the few that were
installed) didn't need to be removed and I got insulation in under all the
front floor.

Bruce I would take the floor pans out as I found a lot of shavings and a
cleko in there....also you need to seal the firewall and you get a better
seal from the back.

Just a thought

I made out with a 12" drill bit or two, and about 3 clecos, and I
think some sort of tool. Funny what you can find in a QB.

First of all, it might not be a bad idea to stick a vacuum hose down in
there the same way you put the insulation in, but it sounds like Van's might
have changed their policy on how they do the QB's. The front floor pans
might be ready to finish up. If the bolts are all in place, I would do
everything I could to not take them out again.

I did pull the floor pans back (just didn't take them out). I got a shop
vac up the whole way to the firewall to suck everything out. My firewall
was already prosealed along the entire bottom of the firewall. I could
reach everything that wasn't prosealed without touching the floor pan. I
got two clecoes, a half a dozen rivets and some nutplates out of other areas
of my QB fuselage.

You know,

All your QB people wouldn't have this problem if you just built it yourself.....then you could justify your sore knees, neck and back like all of us slow build guys and gals!!

Found a cleco under the floor huh? And they laughed at me when I made trays that held each cleco, at least I know where each and everyone of them are. I inventory them after each session....FOD awarness ingrained in me since I was 17, can't help it.

Rick, good post. Now do you know enough to look for SWARF? I have a
wiring PPT presentation that I gave to Tim for the RV University which
identifies its importance - or actually the lack of it by looking for it
and elimination of same.

I wasn't flaming the QB'ers, I read my post and thought hmmmm, don't forget the smiley next time!

I love the building process that's why I went slobuild, it wasn't a dollar factor. It has made it a lot easier to run my conduits but aside from that I can't think of another reason to go slobuild short of the educational and skills value from doing it all. FWIW, I had my fuselage at the QB stage in about two and a half months. I'm not in a big rush to roll it out and fly, gotta balance the real life with the airplane life. One tip I heard about the QB pans though, watch out for the steel shafted pop rivets, if your not real good at drilling out blind rivets you will wallow out the holes, drill the head off and carefully punch out the body.
