				| Hi guys,
 I'm starting my fourth year flying in EAA's B-17 program, and we all know the types of rumors that can get started in the warbird world by something taken out of context.
 
 Just a housekeeping item about EAA's B-17 gear incident: the airplane's back was not broken by the turret being pushed up on the landing.   As I'm sure Jim knows, there is a post atop the ball turret structure that runs to the ceiling which did tear some roof skin out, but the overall fuselage structure was intact (I've seen firsthand the damage and the progress of the repairs in the Weeks hangar many times).
 
 These aircraft would often return from combat with a gear malfunction that caused this same type of damage on landing and it would often "break the back " of the airplane.
 
 I only write this because I am proud to fly with the guys in our program and work with our mechanics who really know how to do it right.   None of these people, or our gracious and warbird-loving FAA program inspector, would consider flying or let fly that airplane without confirmed structural integrity.
 
 Jim is 100% right that there are some great FAA guys out there that love, live, and breathe these airplanes like the rest of us, and they do incredible things that I have seen many times offset the negative impact of some other FAA folks.

				| Mike is correct.   In my 'zeal' I to make a point I over did it.  The EAA's B-17 didn't make  that ferry flight with a "broken back".  They had spent a considerable  time repairing it in CA before the flight.  I stand corrected and certainly  didn't mean to infer that.

				| The Van Nuys FSDO was present and directly supervising the inspection, repairs, the approved test/ferry flight, and the ensuing ferry flight to OSH.  They did in fact sign for these events.   From and operations standpoint, our FAA Program Designee (the equivalent of a Principal Operations Inspector of POI for you airline guys) who sits in on our ground schools, takes his own and rides on our checkrides, also approved the flight.
 It is also worth noting that some of our tireless volunteers drove across the country with 4 rebuilt Wright 1820's (not the engines that had the sudden stoppage) and props that were hung on the airplane before it moved again under its own power.
