How low should the low idle speed be adjusted for on the Rotax 912 UL?
I had someone help with it and he said 1400 rpm and if I pull the throttle that low, the engine shutters. I usually taxi at around 1800 RPMs. With the reduction gear of the Rotax, perhaps 1400 rpm idle is too low? Previously, pulling the throttle back for low idle was at 2000 rpm. It was readjusted for they lower speed.
Engine seems dialed in at cruise and acceleration, but a little rough at low idle, as if the prop is not balanced. I did a few small carbon fiber prop ding repairs and was careful not to overweight one side. Perhaps, I did it inadvertently? It's a Prince P-Tip. Used to purr like a kitten. As the Chinese say, if it's not broken don't fix it? It was adjusted at the conditional inspection. Is perfection too much to expect from a 850 hr. engine? Am I asking too much i was told to do a Bing carb adjust every 50 hours. I have about 20 hours in the aircraft, but you get to know your bird pretty quickly.

I think 1400rpm is definitely too low, and at that speed you should expect to get a deal of gearbox chatter. I'm happy with the engine idling at about 1700. Idle should be smooth at that speed if the carbs are properly synchronised.

I agree that 1400 is too low. I usually idle at 2000 to avoid the gearbox
chatter issue.

Lockwood course instructions was for an idle of 1,400 to 1,600 BUT they add that you shouldn't run your engine that slow,,, because, as you have found ouit, at that slow an idle the engine doesn't run smoothly.
My engine won't stall at 1,500. But that said, I idle at no less than 2,000.
I also have a Prince P Tip. Love it ! ! !

Carbs balanced and Idle at 1900-2000. However, I adjusted my throttle so I could pull it back to 1500 rpm. I could get a bit shorter roll out on landing. You will be amazed what carb balancing can do.

Idling at that rpm is not great for the gear box but being able to pull the
engine back to that rpm is helpful on landings if you need to shorten the
rollout etc.
