Just for information on this oil issue I recount what happened to my rotax 912 uls. It developed an increasingly violent vibration between 4000 and 5000 revs that became so rough it would run up through the seat and vibrate my legs. Point is that it turned out to be a spacer in the gearbox had shattered and all the metal ended up in the oil tank which is a separate container. What is remarkable is that all the metal was sucked past the magnet that has been mentioned on the base of the sump and was contained within the bottom of the scavenger tank. This is now an effective way to test to see if any other metal is around by extracting the tank, tipping the oil into a clean container, checking the base of the tank, then putting the oil back as it has only done ten hours since this all occurred. TT for engine incidentally is 578 hours and the cause of the shim breaking up was probably due to the shims in the gearbox being installed the wrong way round.

As far as checking the oil and overfilling the tank, if the ‘gurgle’ has occurred there cannot be any more oil hidden anywhere in a cold engine so that should surely be the best time to check. It also gives an opportunity to feel if the engine is turning over properly before starting??
