Hi Gang,  We have about 50 hrs now on our 912 S.  We routinely check the oil level by rotating the prop until you hear the "gurgle"and the read the oil level in the stick.  After always seeing the level in the proper range on the dip stick, this last time checking the oil I rotated the prop an extra rotation after hearing the "gurgle" and heard more air. Looking at the oil tank I couldn't believe the oil was running out of the top and on to the floor.  Has anyone experienced this?  Should you stop as soon as you hear the air enter the tank? Did extra air get trapped under the oil, forcing it out of the top?

Bob,

Looks like you overfilled the oil tank. Turning the prop is for
returning engine oil into the tank. Did you add any oil before ?

The 912 series engines hold 3 liters of oil. When changing the oil and
filter (don't forget to drain the oil that remains in the crankcase via
the magnetic drain plug) we add exactly 3 quarts. This puts the level
about the middle of the range. The best time to check the precise level
of the oil is right after flying the airplane. We do this as part of
our standard on post-flight inspection. That way we don't have to rely
on the "hear it gurgle" method. After it cools down the level drops and
this results in some folks adding more oil when it is not needed. FYI,
We had about 100 hours on our last oil/filter change and added no more
than 1 pint of oil during that entire 100 hours of flight.

Gilles, no oil was added. oil checked fine all the previous times. The only difference was rotating the prop more after hearing the 1st gurgle.

Thanks Tom.  Is it 3 liters or 3 qts ?  We didn't do the crankcase plug. Thanks for the heads up.  A friend stopped last night and answered my question (I believe) about the oil coming out of the tank when I rotated the prop after hearing it gurgle.  He said the oil system works by pumping oil from the engine to the tank and back through the engine. When I heard the Gurgle and rotated more, an additional amount of air was sent to the tank as it would normally pressurize the tank and send oil back to the engine.  With the cap off the pressure sent the oil out of the top.  Think of it as if the engine was running, circulating the oil between the tank and engine and what would happen if you took off the cap at that point. I guess the procedure is to stop when you 1st hear the air enter the tank.
