When I purchased my Grove main landing gear, I was told I needed main gear supports from Zenair in Canada, since they supply them to AMD. Now that I'm at that point, I can't say that I understand how they mount. Do they work in conjunction with Zenith 6-B-11-4 (welded main gear attachment) or replace it? Does anyone have any drawings. Picture attached.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe it replaces the piece of aluminum angle that is used with the normal gear. Those welded on pieces allow for the smaller (front to rear width) gear.

The piece in the background goes on the bottom of the fuselage then the gear is sandwiched between it and the pieces in the foreground.

Is that clear as mud? Smile

After posting my question, I basically figured out what you just described. Now I just need to determine if the welded-on spacer goes toward the front or rear of the channel.

The rear, I would believe, based on the gear on my Zodiac being positioned
at the front of the channel.

I had the same question when I went to install my Grove gear. One thing
about this list, questions are sure answered fast!!

In addition to the answers you already have you can go to the AMD site and
look at the drawings (Do other manufacturers of light aircraft provide the
same excellent detailed info? i doubt it.)

weight! The difference between the two is amazing. I am away from my shop right now but if memory serves me correctly there is at least a 10lbs savings.

different alloy and temper - Grove material is stronger. Stronger/stiffer = less weight possible with smaller crossection.

Absolutely, Also a lot more prone to corrosion, something for those guys in coastal, high humidity, pollution areas to consider.

and on the down side as well - also extremely notch sensitive as aluminums go.

Anyone using them should make inspections for nicks and gouges a preflight thing and treat them like a similar nick in a metal prop. Always dress them out in the long axis and avoid any sharp changes.

there are no external brake lines running down the gear legs (though there
are short lines from the bottom of the legs to the brake calipers).

The gun drilled brake lines is why I swapped my gear out for Grove. Having the brake lines just "hang out back" spooked me. My Kitfox had gundrilled Grove gear and it was fantastic. I hope my XL is the same.

While I'll admit the gun-drilled brake lines are nice. The lack of them is hardly anything to be spooked about. Cessna has hung them out the back for years.

I have it in my plane. You do want to make sure you get the gear before you get to that stage. The gear attachment is different. I actually did not get mine from ACS. It is from a CZAW plane that the owner wanted to tear apart due to the accidents. It was almost a new plane and a very well built plane. As far as the re-engineering goes, the gear channel was the exact same as mine with the gear attachments being different. There are 2 metal I beam type fittings that go inside the gear channel from the bottom and 6 support pieces inside the fuse. 4 of them go along the sides of the gear channel and 2 of them go on the inside of the center console and the seat belts attach to them. Makes the seat belt attachment so much stronger. I feel better with that. There is a huge weight savings with this gear. It was not hard at all to convert to use this gear. I got the gear, wheels, tires, brakes and wheel pants for $150.00, so I could not pass it up. I am installing a Corvair on my airframe and I just saved the extra weight from the Jabiru to the Corvair. It is a 2 piece system, but it stands taller. The wheels and tires are much lighter than the grove gear and I thought it might be hard to find parts, but it is not. I have already ordered and received extra disk brakes rotors and pads. I am excited about the gear and hope that it was worth the conversion. I saw the gear on the original plane and it looked really good. I don't know what all comes with the ACS system, but I got everything I needed from the donor plane. I was very impressed with the welded parts. They were top notch parts.
