Hi guys:

Yesterday I made my first takeoff and landings on a grass strip. It rained all day Friday so it was kind of mushy but all went well. I haven't made any video in a while so a friend volunteered to shoot some. Here's a short segment I posted on YouTube.com

Awesome! Can't wait to finish mine.

By the way, how mirror-like is that finish? I polished the hell out of a piece of aluminum just out of curiosity and even though it's mirror-like, it's still not super-clear, and just getting to that point I noticed I worked a piece of .025 down to .024. So how mirror like is that surface really to get it to a point of 'good enough'. Looks great in the video!

Andy:

It is completely mirror-like.

You just have to stay with it. Read the material on Perfectpolish.com. It doesn't really remove material, but it folds down the grain. I made about five passes with the F9 Nuvite. It took weeks to do and made a mess but it was worth it.

Keep at it and you will be practicing landings like I'm doing in no time. This afternoon it was perfect weather here in Nebraska and I did several touch-and-go's. I'm really liking the way the 601XL handles.

That makes sense, folding down the grain. I was just messing around with a piece of scrap with metal polish out of curiosity and noticed that after a lot of polishing it was mirrorlike, but you could still see the grain.

I wonder if that adds any strength?

I bought the whole Nuvite package at Oshkosh last year. Haven't started polishing yet, but plan to.

Do you get much glare from the sun off your wings?

Did you polish the bottom of your airplane? Is it holding up? Is it easy to clean bugs off?

Thanks!

Interesting points.

Also, yeah, how well does it hold up, how long til you have to polish again and is there something to keep the polish job from fading, just wax maybe?

He did polish the underside of his wings. You can see the tie down ring in the picture that he linked to (the one that shows his daughter's reflection).

Scott - you did a really nice job...

There's no glare when flying, but when I'm pulling it out in the sun I get a pretty good flash now and then. I did not polish the bottom of the fuselage but I did do the wings.

The polish job is super durable. I haven't touched it and it looks like the day I finished last year. I wiped some mud off the wings the other day and it was no different than wiping off a painted surface. It is really maintenance free.

I haven't hit any bugs yet. It hasn't warmed up enough in Nebraska for the bugs to come out in full force.

I'm going flying in the morning and will have something to report after that.

Scott.
