Fellow Builders, I'm about to mount my wings for the first time. Any of you fellows got any good tips for success and happiness? Is there a best side to mount first? When fitting is it recommended to install all eight bolts in the main spar ? Hope to hear something and best regards, Bill of Georgia

Three bodies to do my wings.. Drift pins, Boelube, hardware store bolts, remember to provide dihedral (someone lifting the wingtip) to get final bolts aligned. Use “persuasion”. Digital level and measured a bunch of times. Ended up +/- 0.1 degree – or so. When drilling aft spar, make sure drill didn’t slip off intended location (ask me how I know ). 4 plumb bobs and a laser line work great for eliminating sweep. After getting wings on, don’t forget the bottom nut plates and wing fairings – may have to adjust fuselage alignment on cradle to provide access. Bottom line – follow Vans instructions – including the download from the website.

Also, you may want to put your bolts in the freezer overnight to help get them in, it is a very tight fit. Getting them out is fun too.  I also under drilled my rear spare so that after my first flight I could move the aft spar up or down to off set a heavy wing. Luckily, I didn't have to, it flew straight and level first time, so I just brought them up to size and installed the proper bolts.

I made alignment pins by forming a point on some
store bought bolts.
Buy some store bought 7/16' bolts to mount the wings
temporary.
You will remove the wings at least once to attach
platenuts after match drilling the holes where fuselage
meets wing at bottom.
If you have the Quickbuild make sure they did not
put rivets where you will put platenuts.remove them
before first mounting of wings.
When final mounting ,the close tolerance bolts are
a tight fit.I taped them in with a brass hammer and a
bucking bar on the opposite side.I also used some
LP lubricant.
I had three people to hold the wing while I
taped in bolts.
I installed the bolts from rear, because you cannot
insert bottom bolts from forward.
I do not think there is a reason to mount a side first.
Any questions feel free to send me an E-Mail

Hi Bill-

I'm chipping away at an 8, not an 8A, but I don't think there are any
differences in mounting the wings.

I believe the only drivers for picking an installation order are logistics.
IE, what are the physical constraints in the assembly location that will
make one assembly order preferential over another?

I had no trouble installing the wings with the aid of one other person.
Once the wings were in place and pinned, I did all the rest myself.

Also, I didn't install any of the bolts. They are cad plated expensive
bolts, and I didn't want to necessarily damage the plating or threads.
Also, the ends are fairly square and don't lend themselves to being used to
align the holes very well. Consequently, I got an appropriate variety and
number of hardware store bolts and ground them all to drift pins. That
allowed me to use them to coax the final alignment of the wings and to
verify that all the bolt holes lined up at the same time.

The lack of edge distance in the rear attach hardware limits how much
wiggle room you have rigging the wings. You probably will need very
little, anyway. One thing I discovered in this process was the number of
inaccuracies in my QB kit. The canopy rails aren't parallel, which was
cause for me to scratch my head trying to set / determine the true fuselage
attitude. Likewise, the planar section of the aft upper surface of the
wing really isn't all that planar. I ended up averaging the values for the
canopy rails as well as taking a reading adjacent to each wing rib, writing
it at each station, and averaging them. This gave me a 'fudge factor' to
apply to the raw reading at the station where the rigging measurements were
taken.

FWIW-

My bolts had both boelube and freezer visit and they went in extremy hard. If you have an RV 8A DO NOT DRIVE THE BOLTS ALL THE WAY IN BEFORE YOU PUT ON THE NUT.
It was hard to get them in but it was ten times harder to get them out so you could get the nu on.

Otherwise a piece of cake HA HA.

George, thanks for the info. When you were test fitting did you install the four smaller size bolts per wing as well as the four 7/16 bolts? Bill
