Hi All

Just to copy the Yak52 in which I recently had a brake failure and went farming, my L29 decided to follow suit yesterday afternoon J

I had stopped during taxi for traffic, and asked the GIB to hold brakes so I could charge up the hydraulic accumulator which was a bit low.

Then got radio call to say traffic was clearing so told GIB to let go brakes, applied power and taxied away. Wanted to turn so eased in some rudder and applied brakes slightly – uh oh no brakes. Released, tried again, nothing, cut power and simultaneously applied emergency brake. It works great! Stopped in time so avoided the farming experience.

Anyone have this before? Brakes working fine from the back, but front. Cable not broken. My engineer tells me that where both cables come in to brake mechanism, something has gone wrong.

Regards to all
Jorgen

Sounds like your GIB didnt let go, rear brakes override front. I reversed mine since the rear brakes are more sensitive.

Sys tem is working as designed. The instructor in the back has command authority. When the GIB squeezes the brakes it disengages the front brake the guy in front has to squeeze a couple times to regain brake authority.

Thanks all.

OK - well this is interesting. I have taxied another l29 from back and handed control back to the front without any issues.

Can you define “a couple times”? On this occasion I have pumped them many times without effect. Even after towing aircraft back to hangar and checking it out. The front has not re-engaged.

Have gone through flight manual – it does not mention anything. The one maintenance manual talks about disconnecting the front brake, but nothing about re-connect.

Gary, was the change simple to swap them around? This sounds like a winner to do in terms of how we fly these aircraft, with occasional pax in back. Also noticed how easy the brakes are to squeeze in back, compared to front because of the spring added to front system. Like to remove this too – ones hand gets lame after a long taxi in my aerie, as it is very stiff.

Switching the brakes is so easy that I was able to do it.

Pull the seat and open up the floor board and swap the cables on the brake valve and resafety.
Done deal.

I used to have an autopsy report on a guy who ejected from an L-29. Basically it was an inventory of missing parts......Missing right foot, severed left elbow...etc

Got this organised before taking ownership / delivery. Still like it – gives one an extra option.

You don’t have to use it, but its there if you need it.

Update – all fixed. Did not swap as cables lengths were different and I was running out of time.

In case it helps someone else on list, here is how mine works as standard.

There is a lever / cam thingie on the mechanism operated as standard by the rear brake. This engages the cable drive from front brake. If you pull rear brake hard (lots of movement) this dis-engages the lever / front brake.

No amount of fussing with front brake will re-engage, ever.

Pulling rear brake “normally” or fully does not re-engage the lever and front brake. To re-engage, pull rear brake just a touch. This causes the lever to re-engage, and front cockpit brake starts working again.

I also think its a good idea to swap the cables, for 2 reasons:
  1. In my typical use the rear seat is usually occupied by pax who you do not want overriding anything in front. Best to have “master” in front.
  2. Much easier pull – front as standard pulls 2 springs, rear only one spring, so less effort to apply brakes. Easier to lock up a wheel tho.

Regards to all.
Jorgen

Swap the cables anyway and you can make it longer at the brake handle. Good Job!
