Licking the wounds of Rotax not getting the Cessna Light Sport contract.

Someday maybe VANS will move ahead with the RV-12 and there will be lots

of chatter.

After synchronizing the carburetors on my 912, idle speed now goes down to about 13-1400 when I pull the throttle back.    

   

Should I adjust the idle stop screws so that idle speed is in the 1800-2000 range?  Is there a possibility of the engine stopping when I pull back on the throttle at touchdown?

As advised in the Rotax installation manuals, your throttle should 

include a positive idle stop to prevent straining the carb stops. If you 

don't have one, consider installing it. It is then easy to make small 

idle adjustments without disturbing the carb synch.

Yes your engine may stop at touchdown if there is no stop and you pull 

hard on the throttle. But the main goal of not too low an idle speed is 

preventing gearbox chatter and wear.

Hi Tommy,



The answer is yes you should make the adjustment to have your engine idel around 1800rpm. The answer is yes you could lose your engine if you bring it down to those low rpm. Rotax wants the 912 to idle at approximately 1800 rpm to keep the vibration/shock pulsation from the engine reduced in the gearbox.A higher idle is ok, but some like it lower than 2000rpm. A few rpm up or down makes no real difference. I usually will not go below 1750rpm for idle. When you pnematically sync the carbs the idle should have been done at that time to make sure they are equal. If you just turn the idle stop screws without a vacum gage on them you will not know which carb is doing most of the work and the left bank cylinders will be trying to run at a different rpm than the right bank, even with the crossover balance tube. The balance tube can get the 2 carbs close, but is not a fix or substitue for syncing your carbs.

When the vacum gage is in place the one with the least vacum is getting the most fuel. So if you need to come up in rpm turn the carb idel stop screw with the most or highest vacum. The vacum will come down and the rpm will come up. Both carbs should be the same vacum at 1800rpm. If you want your rpm to come down because it is too high then turn the idle stop screw with the least or lowest vacum. As the vacum goes up the rpm comes down.

I monitor this forum, and at the moment there seems to be a lot of happiness

out there regarding the 912s. Everybody, like me, seems to be flying rather

than fixing or adjusting something on their 912s. To me this is good news!

However, have no fear, something will pop up, and then we all will again be

engrossed in solving the "Problem". Finally flying my Allegro 2000 with a

912 out of Laneys Airport (N92) and am enjoying it to the max!

Hi Guys,



I agree the good news as always is that the Rotax 912 just keeps on ticking, like a Timex, but we all need to consider the feeding and care to keep it happy for 10-15 years. If you could do something now for $25 wouldn't that be better than $800 or more later.

The idea of the first post was just to stimulate thought and for people to think about the future and maint. of their great engine, nothing more. Maybe to get more people involved in their own maint. of the engine.

 I have had a couple of 912's and think they are a great engine. 

Just want to help people keep their investment in good healthy shape.



P.S.

I'm not a Jabiru fan.

Yes there is a chance your engine can stop!! My engine stalled out after touchdown once.  Mine did the same thing after synchronizing, and I had to do it over at a higher RPM.  Do the whole process over and make sure the idle speed is correct.

my 582 was running fine then after not flying for 4 days the  batteries went dead . so I half charged it and went flying but I noticed my  volt meter read about 11  when it always read 14 or so now today after not  flying for 2 days it was slow to roll over so I put it on a charger the charger  read 7 so I charged it up full and will weight till Friday morn to fly  again  HOW do I trouble shoot this problem?  malcolm  michigan

Hi Malcolm,

Don't fly it until you have this figured out. 

You may lose an engine in flight.

It has to be your charging unit out put or the reg/rectifier. My bet it is your reg/rectifier. They go out more often than most charging system parts. It is easy to replace, too. First look carefully at the wires going into the reg/rectifier and see if they look burnt or very dark in color. You can take a volt meter and put this on the terminals to the battery and see what the voltage to the battery is, like you said it should be about 13.8V to 14.2V is normal. This may vary a little, but should be close.

Your advice not to fly until he figures out the charging problem may be misleading. For systems that require external electrical power, like radios etc. or engine starting, this makes sense. However, as you probably know, the magnetos in the 912 series engines, once the engine is running, are self-sustaining with no need for external excitation. The engine will continue to run until the mags are grounded or it runs out of fuel.

That's true, but is it true with his 582?

I would feel better if I personally knew what the cause was so as not to damage anything or get caught too far from home. 

I'm the kind of guy who thinks that if it was working then why isn't it now and I just have to know the reason why. Just my nature I guess.

I don't argue with the need to find the cause of the problem and fix it, but don't want anyone laboring under the misconception that the Rotax CDI ignition systems requires outside electrical power to keep the engine running. Though there are differences among the Rotax CDI ignition systems, from what I've seen in the Rotax installation manuals, they all work on the same principle, which means the 582 will continue to run without any external electrical supply, as do the 912 series.

Texas to Idaho and back puts my 912S somewhere in my soul now.  I've had

that makes sense and makes me smile.  My Kitfox with a 912S purring on the 

front,

twisting thru Moab Ut...  Yeah, I had a good week.

I glad to hear and see people are out enjoying life and flying both. You will like the 912 for many years to come. 



I'm also happy to see that all of us are sharing ideas, education and issues here on the forum. I think it makes everyones life easier and more fun.
