I've gone through 2 shower of spark units and am wondering if I'm doing something wrong!!!
Is there an alternate unit like a solid state system or something. Is there a problem with reliability with the standard russian unit?

It does not sound normal to burn those up. We seldom replace them. Perhaps your wiring is wrong and it is running too often. It should only be active when you press the start button.
I made a few solid state units a few years ago, but the Russian units were so low cost that it did not pay to produce them. You can always use a spare MODEL T coil unit if you have on handy. The T-6 guys also have a unit that most home builders use.

We stock the Russian shower of sparks and sell 1 or 2 a week and usually don't see any problem with them. Seems like most of them last 20 years or so.
Check out the wiring like George suggested and if they are not adjusted properly it can cause them to overheat which can cause the coil to crack.
I have seen people not ground them internally. You would think the housing is grounded to the points but you have to have a ground run to one of the terminals inside. But this just keeps them from working.
