I have a Pipistrel Sinus 912 that uses a Rotax 912 UL2.

In the last few flights the Generator Light has been intermittent and in
the last flight it has always been on.
The voltage oscillate between 12.2 and 13.5 Volts.
The battery seems to be charged.

The regulator is Rotax 264 870.

Any advices?

Thank You

-- Silvano

Hi Silvano,

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the reason the light is coming on is because you are dipping down to 12.2 volts.
You won't charge that low. You need to print the Rotax manual online and see what the values are and test the reg. If that's not an option then you need to replace it with a known good reg. and I think you will see higher charging voltage. I am going to the field today. I will double check and see exactly what mine is and email you back.

I verified that the regulator is the Ducati 343620.
I am in doubt if replacing it with a similar one or installing a
different one,
like the Key West.

The Key west is easy to find, I don't know where to buy a Ducati.

Any advice is welcomed.

The 912 charging system is known for charging to a relatively low
voltage. Our voltage usually reads about 12.6-12.7 volts before
starting. In the winter when we don't fly as much, we keep a trickle
charger plugged into the system. In the winter, after the trickle
charger has been on overnight or longer, but is then unplugged, the
voltage unusually reads about 13.2-13.3 volts. The 12.6-12.7 volts is
normal for all the 912 engines I've seen. I have no idea why Rotax
builds it that way.

I have the 40 amp rotax optional alternator. (It counts  even if it's still in it's box on the shelf ,next to the plane right?) In any event the instructions include the option of just putting the tow alternators in parallel. The 18 amp alternator is regulated to 13.5 v. The 40 amp alternator is set to 14.3.

According to the hand out, somewhere around a 30-32 amp load the output drops to 13.6 and the smaller alternator kicks in.

Mine has run at 13.8 volts for 350 hours (according to the voltmeter built
in to a Garmin GPS).

The problem was a wire that was not crimped properly.
Now the voltage is 13.8 Volts and the light is off

Thank You
