Closing the loop...
I spoke w/ Garmin Tech Support and the guy who teaches the Experimental Wiring class at the Aircraft Electronics Assn and I stand corrected. Somehow, I got it in my head that you should populate all the pins in a DB connector, even if there is no wire attached to it. Don't know where I got this but it is INCORRECT. - I was mistaken (not the first time;)
I don't think that there is anything wrong with doing this, but it is not a recommended procedure (as I had originally thought).
It is interesting to note however, that pre-wired harnesses from Spruce come with all the pins populated (even the ones without a wire attached). This is probably so that you can customize the pre-fabbed harness and add wires specific to your installation. But it would seem better if Spruce just populated the ones required for their harness and sent you a bag of spare pins. I wonder how many people bother to remove the un-used pins?
