Not posted here for a while but I have started my tri gear conversion. This week has been setting up the fuselage, locating FS70 (which was challenging starting with a painted aircraft) installing the main gear sockets and bonding in rib 1.

Relatively quiet at this end but I painted the tail access covers to start building encouragement to finally paint the airplane. It is working Smile. Will fly to Triple Tree this week and then Thomasville Fly-Ins and then will probably ground the airplane for painting. I plan to make it a slow process since stamina is at a premium lately and I want to do most (if not all) of it in-house. It is also my intent to make it as nice as I possibly can (already have an award winning homebuilt so have the knowledge but that was 25 years ago!! I do feel a little older)

The covers served as a test of primer combinations with weight and finish research in mind. Came out pretty nice except for nibs here and there because I painted outside and not in a spray both. The paint was also very old (25 yrs old PPG Durathane). Yes, that's a stretch, but the base looked perfect and the activator was also perfectly crystal clear so gave it a try. It cured fine but you can tell it lost some of it's solid's holding ability. Good enough for this test. BTW, the screws are a little out because I was allowing the paint to cure as much as possible before making them snug.

I will be using new paint on the airplane, of course, procured from Southern Polyurethanes which makes the wonderful epoxy primer I used and still holding strong.

Picture included.

Took cowling off to inspect engine in preparation for my trip to Triple-Tree this week. All looks perfect so to this point it's a go. Let's hope the weather holds.

Best,
Chris

Flew 7 young eagles, 4 keen girls...great to see. Did a breakfast fly in, followed up with a trip for some pioneer village style bread and cheese.Finished off with a static display at our local yearly airshow (with my son doing P1 duty).
Now eagerly awaiting delivery of my E-props glorious CS prop.
A good couple of europa weeks for me. Smile

On Friday we flew to Havana IL for a RAF fly in featuring star gazing. Students from local universities bring BIG telescopes to show stars in the dark night sky. Our dog Finn did really well with his first camping adventure.

Saturday we flew to Hagerstown, IN for a fly in camp out. Another nice day, walk into town, ice cream, and really good chicken dinner.

Sunday, an easy return flight home.

Great weekend!

Thrown myself into the deep end of "not comfortable" zone for advanced stall spin recovery and emergency maneuvering training.

Left 181 in the shed due to weather forecasts, so drove 6.5hrs instead into 25kt crosswind on the ground (60kt upstairs) and burnt twice as much fuel in the Smartcar.

Arrived that afternoon at the field; windsock was stretched out vertical... next day was the same...

Today was perfect (ground looped the pitts on first taxi run of brisk walking pace; twitchy in all operational modes)... got up in the air and got tumbled around and trained by one of the best; no longer terrified by the thought of spinning; tried to spin the Pitts every which way starting with a balanced deep stall and 2000fpm decent straight and level, then full cross controls, ascending and descending turns, 360 degrees of bank; high attitude ascending climb at full power, wouldn't spin, wouldn't stall... did the same again and pulled the stick back; spun in, spun out, with most consistent cockpit response today being "f'ing hell"... can now fully understand and appreciate how so many fatalities consistently occur in circuit (total instant loss of stability, control, and situational awareness)... can't learn this stuff reading a book or watching slide shows...

So far breakfast and lunch has stayed where its meant to.

Starting to get comfortable with spins.

More training tomorrow.
