Dear Listers,

After my landing mishap in 2011, the replacement left fuel tank I had
built for my PP QB RV-8 has big leaks in at least four places. Slosh
would probably fix it, but everybody including Van's says "don't slosh!".

Does anyone have a lead on a Pre-Punched, preferably Quick Build LEFT
Fuel Tank for an RV-8 that is in 10/10 condition? Maybe from an RV-8
that had only right wing damage. I would like a tank that is proven
to not leak with no damage, and with a fixed fuel pickup.

I would love to get my RV-8 back in the air. The prospect of
building a new fuel tank from parts seems daunting and time consuming
right now, and prone to dealing with leaks again.

Thank you,

Matt Dralle

Matt,
Mooney Aircraft has specified a top coat PR1005 since at least 1975 for
all of their fuel tanks. I have had the pleasure of both removing and
applying this sealant(as well as a complete reseal of one and partial
other tank). PR1005 does none of the bad things alleged by Vans and
others. In fact the chemicals that break down the Vans and (Mooney)
Proseal (PR1422?) will only soften the PR1005. This Buna N "slosh"
coating is best applied with a brush before the tank is closed, or
through an access panel. Cleanup is generally MEK or acetone.
The procedure to find leaks in a Mooney tank is to open one access
panel, apply soapy water solution, close with a scrap piece of
plexiglass and duct tape, then pull about 1/2 psi or less vacuum And
look for bubbles with a flash light. Where it bubbles is where the leak
is. Where the leak shows on the outside is how the fuel runs from inside
leak to where it shows outside.
The Mooney tank actually gets 3 coats because in the last century they
built the wing, then sealed the tanks afterwards...no wet riveting at
all. The Coats are PR1422, PR1428 and PR1005. Otherwise known as B
compound, A compound and cherry juice. Done right a tank seal was good
for at least 20-30 years.
I don't know if it is easier to drill out the tank back plate or to cut
access panels as needed. Those are Proseal brand numbers. They do cross
reference to Flamemaster Chemseal that meets the exact same milspecs for
a lot less money. Just another route to solving the problem. I think
Vans at one time would sell a built and tested tank for a price.
