Anticipating that a Kolb Firestar or Mark 3 would be stored wings-folded into a shared hangar, I'd like to ask the group what the maximum wind speed is that would allow a one-person folding or unfolding of the wings for storage or flight, respectively.

Since no one else has yet spoken up ..  I owned a MkIII for 10+ years and 90% of the time I did the folding by myself.

I created a couple of padded jigs that would support the wings while I did the honors, and I likely didn't try anything with wings > 7-8 mph.  Many times I'd tie it down then come back later when the wind died down.  And I was lucky since my grass taxiway was sheltered between houses and hangars close by.
Even with help, a windy day is challenging.

I concur. Once you release the forward pin attachment on the wing and rotate it to vertical, which is necessary, it becomes like carrying a Really big sheet of plywood. I was lucky to be between two rows of t-hanger. Which usually put me in a wind shadow. 10 knots would have been a team challenge.

I have a MKIII that I have folded and unfolded many times by myself. I would put the wind limit at under 5 MPH. I know of at least one beautiful MKIII that was destroyed by a wind gust when folding. When in doubt get help or tie it down til the winds die down. It might be inconvenient but so is a rebuild. When tied down these planes can handle some big wind. Was camping under the wing of my plane at Airventure when a thunderstorm passed through. I looked out of the tent and could see light under the wheels. The next day I found no damage but one previously repaired flap had filled with water.

Hi Paul,
I would like to add to my earlier comments that one day when the wind was between 5 and 10 knots, and happened to be lined up with the space between the rows of t-hangars, I lost control of one of my MKIII’s wings. It did an impressive loop and ended up with the tip on the ground. There was damage to the fabric on the leading edge, which was no problem to fix. It also made me think that the rear attachment was possibly compromised. I consulted Brian at Kolb, and he helped me determine that it was ok.

My point is that it happened in the blink of an eye, even though I was being very careful. So again, I urge you to proceed with care, and consider a tie-down if necessary, enlisting the help of another person, or moving to a wind-shadowed area before attempting to fold your Kolb.

Sorry I didn’t relate this tale of woe in my earlier post. I chalk that up to the result of an aging brain....or my effort not to recall and relive that scary event.

Kolbs are very sturdy in the wind while flying, and are often the only remaining aircraft flying the Paradise City pattern at Sun and Fun when the wind picks up. They are also one of the few that offer the great feature of being able to be folded for storage or trailering. Therefore, they’re a great pick.
Happy and safe flying!
Dave
