I’m in the process of refining the W&B of our CJ6. It needs more aft ballast (of course). We have western batteries secured in the original battery box but to me it makes sense to add ballast to that to bring it up to the original weight. We plan to add lead to the tailskid and we already have a scuba tank on the ADF station.

In which case, does anyone have the typical original battery and ADF weights please?

You really need to level and re-weigh the airplane and then add the
appropriate weight to the tail to bring it into CG.?? I think you'll be
very surprised at the weight difference from the W&B sheet you're
currently working from.

Hi Jay
Is your schedule for the existing configuration currently way off or have you substantially changed something (noted you did a repaint)?

My experience after we removed all the defunct radio gear, adf kit and armored ables etc was to completely fill the tail skid with lead and then add some more ballast (don’t recall the exact amount) onto a a purpose built shelf/plate we engineered into the fuselage structure above the tail skid and that got us into limits.

I know it’s tempting to load up the old ADF/battery box stations with thick plates but to me it’s seemed bad practice as you have to add a lot of weight in those locations and I wanted a lighter bird (better rate of climb/less fuel used etc). In the end with all usable fuel drained and full oil we came out at 1066kg
To digress a bit it would be nice to even less weight in the tail and I saw Alex at GT Props is doing a carbon blade conversion for the CJ with stock HS6 motor and I do wonder if this may take enough weight off the nose . Not sure if the blades could be used here though?

How much and how you put the ballast in the tail of the airplane is a matter of what you wish to do. The simplest thing or what I feel was simple anyway was to make a bag out of light canvas that's the shape and size of the very rear tail cone of the CJs.  You can sew it up to shape with a drawstring to close it at the top. That whole bag can be put down in that section and then filled up with lead birdshot. It will fit snugly in the whole compartment.  The bag with the bird shot inside will fit snugly and firmly inside the whole compartment. It will not move around at all.  At an annual or condition inspection you feel you need to inspect that compartment it's a simple matter of vacuuming out the birdshot and removing the bag and you have access to that compartment. When you're done put the bag back in put the birdshot back in and pull up the drawstring and that's it.  Mine came to roughly 33 lb.  This setup proved well for 24 years and 2500 + hours I put on the airplane.
If you put lead in the tail skid the only come to around 3 to 5 lb not much more.
I cannot remember the exact weight of different items that I removed from my airplane 24 years ago. but the ADF was over 30 lb and the antenna for it was well over 9 lb.  In all and all I remove 188 pounds of stuff from the airplane. And after ballast was put in I realized 133 pounds of increase in pay load.  The VHF the VHF transceiver and transmitter each weighed less than 20 lb thus there was 40 lb saved right there. The battery compartment has not been changed.at all.  The idea of birdshot in a bag is not new. The Lake LA4 had a 25 lb bag of shot that would be moved from the pilot seat to the nose section if the airplane was being flown solo.  Over the years I've seen numerous ways of putting ballast in the tail of the airplane, some of it quite complicated. The principle of KISS is a good one to follow.
