Perplexed by the primer and hoping to get some info if possible. Does anyone have a diagram of the Yak 52 primer?
It was quite tight and when we attempted to prime the system no pressure appeared on the fuel pressure gauge. We loosened the friction nut to the point that it was removed completely… When we put it back it would prime the system and the cylinder but we could not rotate it to the centred position. Even though no fuel pressure was showing while priming, there was fuel going to the cylinders because it flowed out when we opened the manifold valve at the bottom of the engine. If we tighten the friction nut it does not move at all. When we loosen the friction nut again it can rotate left and right but not go back to the centre. Anyone had this experience?

Where to begin!

The Yak 52 "primer" is a dual unit with a central OFF position. One side
when selected is a hand pump delivering fuel through the by-pass in the
engine driven fuel pump to the carb. It is an emergency pump in the event
of primary (engine driven) pump failure.

The other side is a primer delivering fuel to the top of the blower chamber
through a nozzle where (in theory) it is atomized and delivered by blower
(supercharger) rotation to the cylinders. In fact (IMHO) it mostly just
flows down the chamber walls to the #5 cylinder where (if you have your head
up your ass) it will give you a hydraulic lock.

Since I have a CJ I don't know which side is which! (Dennis?) The CJ uses
exactly the same unit however it is modified to act as a primer only on
either side. Very simple, short by-pass tube. The hand (emerg.) fuel pump
is a separate unit (wobble pump).

Presumably you have removed the pump handle and on re-installing it have
filed to align the drive for the valve control. Find a 1/2" or so wood
dowel and file a notch in one end so you can correct that.

Typo in my last - "filed" should read "failed".

Also should have noted there is no fuel pressure indication for the "prime"
operation.

Unless you own a YAK-50 and then it's reversed!  (Hi Dennis!)

Thanks guys for your feedback. My question was more around how I could get it back to the centre as somethings stopping that. Could you give me more detail on what I should do with the dowel Walt? I don’t understand the mechanics of the primer hence I was looking for a diagram. Thanks guys!

If you removed it completel it could be upside down ou you’ve got the knurled ring to loose and it won’t bottom out.

When my primer has resisted turning back to centre from cylinder priming, pushing the handle in hard while turning has released it. But I note Anthony's cautionary advice that if plunger has been replaced upside down pushing would not help. if the knurled ring is loose, maybe also? Peter.

Hi;

With the plunger handle in the center position remove the complete plunger
assy. Note the position of the slot at the bottom of the plunger relative
to the position of the handle. Note the position of the mating tang at the
bottom of the primer body. If not in alignment with the plunger slot use
the slotted dowel to press downwards and rotate the tang to line up with the
plunger slot.

Re-install the plunger being careful not to damage the seal. You should be
able to feel slot/tang engagement with slight rotation of the handle. Once
positively engaged ensure the knurled nut is fully down. Press downwards on
the handle and check for proper rotation in each direction.

There is the possibility that the slot/tang engagement is perfectly OK but
does not operate properly due to the knurled nut being too loose. Check
that out first.

If you cannot get to the center position remove the plunger where it is.
The object is to ensure the the slot & tang are properly engaged throughout
the
required travel.
