Hi Group

I live on Long Island in New York. There are two gas stations within a reasonable driving distance that sells 98 or 100 Octane No Alcohol MoGas. I imagine it's racing fuel? Very expensive at ~ 10 to 12$ per gallon. My question is if that sort of fuel is compatible with Rotax 914? My concern is when storing for a long period of time it may be better than 93 Octane with Methanol (I use pure synthetic oil)? Or would a better alternative be to use semi synthetic oil and for long periods of sitting just put in 100LL?

I wouldn’t use racing fuel. Too hot!

Ron, 100LL can be stored in a SEALED container for two years and still be all right to use. Mogas is getting iffy after two months even if the container is perfectly sealed. Its reduced life is because of all the aromatic hydrocarbon additives that replace the anti detonation properties of lead. Racing fuel is just higher octane and more resistant to detonation. 100LL can cause lead fouling of your spark plugs and pack up your engines gear box, decreasjng the time between rebuilding it. If you think you might run leaded fuel from time to time then run the semi-synthetic, it's better at keeping the lead in suspension than full synthetic. If you follow Rotax' oil change recommendations the oil barely has time to start breaking down. I've run my Toyota truck to 15,000 miles between changes of Mobil 1. 200,000 miles and it still runs like new.

Ron,

We use nothing but 93 octane auto gas in our 914. For winter storage we try to have the tank about 1/2 full and add Stabil at the suggested concentration. We run the pumps to get it distributed through the entire system. In the Spring, we top up with fresh auto gas and go flying.

We've done this for more than 10 years without a problem. Our plane is in a unheated hangar all winter.

This is the same way we store our sailboat outside each winter. We've done that for 35 years.

We use AeroSport 4 oil.
