Hi hugh as a ammeter has to be connected in series with the output of the regulator I think the output is probably 30 amp which will be greater than the digital meter usually 10 amp.

You can get a cheap analog DC 30 amp ammeter with a seperate shunt from ebay and connect that.

Alternatively you can get a relatively cheap DC 30-0-30 amp clipon ammeter again from ebay and clip over regulator output cable or battery cable will no be very accurate but probably ok for your needs
