I have a PC 680 battery in my RV 8 and am wondering how long on average will one last.
Mine has been installed for almost 6 years.
Thanks

I am on my fourth PC 680 in 6 years. My current primary is 1 year old and the secondary is 2 years old. I’m amazed yours still holds a charge.

I run two PC-625s (two are needed to hit my IFR electrical power reserve target). Both are used for engine start and in normal mode run in parallel. I replace one battery every three years - so no battery is older than six years. I started out replacing one every two years but found they still had a lot of life left in them. The pulled batteries go on to a second life in various tractors.

Note - I once killed a new battery by leaving the master on. While some say you can beat new life into abused Odyssey batteries, it is better to replace the battery and then experiment on the dead one for service in a tractor.

I change mine out every three years as a precautionary measure. So far no battery failures. That may be overkill, but it affords me some peace of mind and I’m willing to pay for that.

There's a pretty big sample size on the VAF rv site. The guys who have short lived pc680s are usually the ones using 'maintainers' regularly. AGM batteries last a long time if not needlessly cycled by leaving a maintainer on them. I ran a cheap pc625 equivalent in my rv4 for about 6 years, and it still had around 65% of its capacity left.
It does pay to check capacity at annual, especially if you're electrically dependent. Being able to crank the engine isn't a good indicator of capacity.

I end up replacing my 680 every 2 years. At about the one and half year mark, in the winter they get weak and have trouble turning the cold engine, especially after sitting 2 to 3 weeks. My battery is in the rear if the plane, that may make a difference compared to engine compartment installs. Been that way for the 10 years or so I’ve been flying the airplane.

I have never had a problem starting even after leaving it for a month. Also, have never used a maintainer on it.However I did order another figuring 6 years is long enough.
This is a good discussion. Nice to have all this feed back.

I think that there are two things that prematurely kill the Odssey batteries:
1. not charging at high enough of a voltage
2. Slow drains while sitting
I've got my voltage regulated at 14.4 volts and when the battery disconnects the only parasitic load is the Dynon keep alive.
I've got two PC625s, one for cranking, one for backup. I do the same as a lot of guys, add a new one to the emergency position every 2 years(thinking about three) and make the old emergency one the new cranking battery.
Batteries are substantially more reliable if you avoid cranking on them.
I took year off work to travel and the plane sat for 9 months with a 2 year old battery, I came back and it started right up with no charging.

Ed,
I agree - a very good discussion.
I concur with all of the comments. I started out replacing 1 battery (two on board) every two years. Cap checks showed the old battery to still be very capable - can't remember the exact numbers - I had the guys in my FBO check it for me. I changed to 4 year swapout and I have had virtually no issues even with occasional long sit times.
However, I am replacing the entire panel - EFIS, txpndr, radios, AP - and the batteries have been sitting unused and uncharged for 6 months. So, as part of the overall upgrade, I decided to install EarthX LiFePo4 batteries. I'm having to make new battery mounts since the EarthX have slightly different dimensions. It is always something, isn't it? I'll send an update later in the year when I have some experience with the new batteries. One thing is for sure, they are much lighter than the PC680s.
