Bob, have you read the September 2017 Kitplanes Magazine? The author of "Electrical, Part 3" has quoted you out of context to make it seem that you recommend two aircraft batteries. The author also stated that avionics need protection from power surges that occur during engine starting. And he wrote that hall effect sensors contain an induction coil. Do they?

Hi Joe,

Sad to say, Kitplanes is neither a scientific journal with peer review, nor a major newspaper with several levels of review and fact checking. Favorite flying magazine of mine, though it may be, it is just a popular press magazine, not a technical journal. It is heavily dependent on advertisers and probably has only one or two people on staff including their excellent editor who actually knows anything in detail about technological issues.

They are, however, pretty good about printing letters to the Editor with corrections.

Hmmmm . . . my first design goal is to figure the
elegant architecture for meeting anticipated
missions with the minimum of hardware and
system complexity. Figure Z13/8 is probably
suited to task for 98% of OBAM aircraft

careful evaluation for return on investment
and sweetening the FMEA.

Some do . . . the more accurate, 'closed loop' sensors
do feature nulling magnets wound onto the gapped core. The
sensor assembly includes electronics configured
to drive the nulling current such that force in the
gap is maintained at net zero flux.

This same article speaks to open-loop sensors. While
not as accurate and free of drift they are getting
better. I keeps some around quick-n-dirty look-see
on some unknown current . . . or when I want a really
small sensor mounted right onto a circuit board.

Here's an open loop device that will convert a 200A
current flow into a +/-2.5v signal.

A closed loop doesn't have to be huge . . .

This little board mounted device is one of my
favorites . . . VERY linear and low temperature
drift.

Bottom line is that they come in both flavors.

The alternator output sensor on the B&C standby alternator
regulator is an open-loop device.

I used to do some writing for Kit Planes but I've become
somewhat disenchanted with their editorial policy for
peer review. Bailed out of Sport Aviation way back

Kettering opined on several occasions: "There is a great
difference between knowing and understanding: you can
know a lot about something and not really understand it."

In the context of this missive, I would add: "If you
understand something, you OWN the knowledge. Ergo you
can also explain it. When you cite the work of others
as germane to your assertions and conclusions, you're
kinda obligated to at least provide a hyperlink to
a source authored by that individual. The author of
the Kit Planes article would have done himself and
his readers a favor by offing links to anything

This isn't a contest, it's about doing the best we
know how to do today and making it better tomorrow.

Speaking of those lead brick house plants, some
of my farmer/rancher friends are spending
kilobux on replacement of batteries that died before
their time . . . and you thought the last battery you
put in your car was rather $breathtaking$. I am pleased
to see that our old friends at Deltran have a solar
version of the Battery Tender series of charger/maintainers.
I'm about to try a pair of them out on a 24v John Deere
road grader.
