I'm so sorry, Sabrina.

Was your father flying your plane?

MARENGO, Ill. -- One person was killed in a plane crash overnight in northwest suburban Marengo.

Fire crews were dispatched at 7:29 a.m. after someone spotted the wreckage of a single-engine plane in an area off of Meyer Road just north of Pleasant Grove Road, according to Marengo firefighter Joe Taylor.

The home-built Zenair CH601 small aircraft crashed in a field under "unknown circumstances" and the pilot was killed, according to FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro. The pilot was the only occupant.

The crash appeared to have occurred sometime between Friday night and early Saturday morning, Taylor said.

Digging through multiple news reports it seems the plane was not indeed a home built CH601.  The FAA registry shows the plane, N4218, was an SLSA built by AMD.  It was owned and seems likely flown by Rob Sherman of Bufalo Grove, IL.

Here is an update on the Marengo, IL accident that destroyed an AMD SLSA Zodiac XL.  The preliminary NTSB report can be found at:  http://app.ntsb.gov/pdfgenerator/ReportGeneratorFile.ashx?EventID 161210X01354&AKey=1&RType=Prelim&IType=FA

It seems clear to me that this was not an example of structure failure.  Rather it was a case of a Sport Pilot departing for a night flight and failing to maintain control of his airplane.

As far as i know there is still no example of a Zodiac XL suffering structure failure after installing the upgrade.

Very unfortunate indeed. Subsequent to the B revision, the 601 and 650 have had a pretty good run. However, there is nothing in the report to indicate that the aircraft in question did, or did not, receive the B revision.

I don't think this is an issue for two reasons;
1.  All AMD manufactured planes were required to have the revision.  They were grounded until it was performed.
2.  This accident didn't fit the pattern of in-flight breakup.  All the parts were in the same place.  The fact that a Sport Pilot decided to fly at night is a strong indication that he lost control due to lack of training.  The NTSB already said it seems it was a loss of control accident.

At this point, it is highly unlikely that the NTSB knows the cause of the crash. From the wreckage, they may be able to eliminate some possibilities. They can tell if the plane was intact at the time of impact and possibly whether it was under control. The fact that a sport pilot chose to fly at night tells us that he violated the FARs and nothing more. He was a 62 year old sport pilot training to be a private pilot and we have no idea how much night training he’s had at this point. The flight took place in VFR conditions over flat terrain in a well lighted region. There a number of reasons someone can lose control of an airplane including control system failure and medical incapacitation, among others. Any attempt to attribute a cause to the crash at this point would be pure speculation. --
