I have 12 hours on the RV-10 and for the most part all is going well. I
have a fairly warm tunnel that I'll apply the techniques offered here to
fix. I have two other issues I'll address in separate messages.
My avionics are getting REALLY warm, in fact the DYNON is running really
slow (hit the timer function and it counts up at about 30% normal speed).
What sort of methods are you guys using to keep things under control. I
remember several comments about computer fans and that seems like a good
idea. I also considered running a blast tube off the ventilation scoop and
direct fresh, cool air behind the panel at a slight loss to passenger
comfort.
Thanks,
Marcus

Marcus,
I have a transponder that is overheating. As a temporary fix, I did exactly what you mentioned. I connected a piece of scat tubing to the passenger vent with a hose clamp and pointed it up toward the stack under the panel. Incidentally, I have been able to keep passengers happy in hot weather by pointing the left side vent across the cockpit.
As a more permanent fix I plan on installing some strategically mounted computer fans.

We have installed an AmeriKing cooling fan 3 or 5 ports with lines running
to the back of the radio stack, but nothing for the Dynons. Haven't had any
problems. Do you have a way of checking the temp at specific places behind
the instrument panel to make sure it is heat that is causing the problem in
the Dynon? I would agree that running a decent sized hose from the right
side air vent to somewhere behind the panel for a flight might narrow down
the possible problems.

I think I'll order the cooling fan as well, probably should have done that
from the start but it didn't even occur to me.
One detail I didn't include on the Dynon, it actually did it's "I'm really
getting hot here" trick where it turns grayscale and says the temp is too
hot. I'll try ducting some air short term while the various fans show up.
Thanks,
Marcus

Marcus,
I got a 3 output avionics cooling fan too. It's probably a
worthwhile investment.

I have the 3 port ameriking fan which connects to both 430's and the transponder, but both of my Dynon's (small versions) don't have any cooling and I've found that in the hot sun while flying the EFIS which is mounted at the top of the panel is alarming with high internal temp and the screen changes to a gray scale instead of the normal color screen. In working with Dynon, they said it will still function but is outside the temperature limits in which they calibrated the unit, so it may not be as accurate.
Thank You

Hmm. An EFIS that is "outside the temperature limits . . . so it may not
be as accurate " - that's kind of scary.

I'll byte... What sort of "avionics" fan are you guys referring to and where
does one get one? I'm guessing Spruce (like everything else), but I haven't
looked.
Anyone know if Dynon is using mil-spec parts? How about gluing on a heat sink?
Seems like the Dynon engineering department might be interested in real world
feedback.
Does anyone have photos of where they are mounted said fans?
Thanks,
Jay
looking forward to bending fuse skins - not!

This is the one I got:

You may not want to deal with Stein though....he's too nice for
most people. Try to find someone who'll treat you a little
worse.

I mounted mine on one of the vertical ribs, forward of the subpanel.

Yep Spruce. It's a multi port fan that you can hook SCAT tube to. Not
overly expensive either.

Dont you all have a "large fan" out front already running every time the avionics are used? Why add more electrical components with failure potential, just run an air line off the vent to pass air over the back of the avionics??? Ambient air is all the same temp..... acutally a fan my just circulate hot air from under the panel???

Exactly, the last time I flew through rain I was really glad I didn't pipe
the air up into my avionics. I didn't get soaked, but there was no doubt
water was happy to press right in the ventilation scoops.
One other thought I had was to draw air from above the glare shield by. The
shield itself is hot, but the air just above seems pretty reasonable. I
also had a plan to set the switch up to reverse polarity and then I could
turn it into a defog like some guys have done. Some loss in efficiency
running the blades backwards, but it would be better than nothing.
Thoughts???
