I hope someone can help.  I have a c90 faceplate, and the EL backlight will

randomly go light to dark. Could it be the EL strip behind the lcd panel? I

have another unit and faceplate, so the problem lies in this faceplate.

Hi Shane,



I'm recollecting from the times I've had my C90 faceplate apart that the power to the EL Backlight is via two small soldered connection standoffs.  Seems highly likely that one or both of these connections has become unsoldered/broken and simply touching up with the soldering iron would remedy the problem.  If you take this little project on, however, be warned that the connections to the _LCD_ are extremely delicate and if you mis-handle the display in the least you will end up with one or more rows of stuck on pixels.  Its been a while since I've had the faceplate apart, so I can't remember if you can check the BL connections without having to disturb the LCD connections.  Maybe.  



One last word of caution.  When you take the faceplate apart, do it on a large, cleared off table with a clean white towel spread out.  There are a number of very small parts and springs that will fall out of the faceplate when you pull it apart and if you're not careful, they will easily become lost since they're so small.  For example, the "Eject" button has a tiny tiny spring that isn't attached to the button.  Boing....

Thanks alot for this warning, I'f had a couple face plates apart already to

refurb with new plastics, and boing! lost that little spring on one of them.

I took a spring from a broken CDrom drive and fabricated one very similar. I

did check the connections to the EL strip, and they look fine. I am

wondering if just replacing the EL strip would remedy this problem, I found

a 1"x 5" strip which looks exactly like the one for the C90, but I would

need a 3/4 x 4 one, which seems impossible to find. The parts store.com or

Sony fot the matter won't sell this piece alone, but they do for th 910 and

others, strange. From what I have read, there should be an oscilator

somewhere which controls frequency, inturn actually controls the brightness,

and this has to be in the faceplate because the other one is fine. There is

a white fuse looking thing on the FP board, which is labled "OSC", I wonder

if this is the culprite?
