On my RV-4 I spent a HUGE amount of time acid washing, alodining, and epoxy priming every single part. On the RV-10 I have been using self etching primer to help reduce the work.
We just bought a 1947 Cessna 140 for the kids to lean to fly and I was installing shoulder belts in it this weekend. We had the head liner, carpet, seats, ..... out of it.
There is no primer on any of the Aluminum anywhere and there is absolutely no corrosion on it, yes in over 59 years!
I think I should immediately take it apart and prime it before it starts to fall apart J

I opened a friends 1986 C-182 and found widespread but light corrosion
all over the inside of the empennage. It was sold by Aurora Aviation as
"Always hangared". The logbooks showed 20 years on the New England
seacoast. The only areas which escaped pitting were alodined and primed
for use on amphibs. Seems Cessna was clearing out inventory in the late
80's as they shutdown GA production around that time.
I have painted numerous C150s and C172 which had exfoliation and
filiform corrosion from being left out in KS overnight before final
topcoat the next day. That acid rain can be a bitch.
In your case Rob, I think you got a true Hangar Queen. Congrats.

Get on that primer! At this rate you've only got 70 or 80 useful years left.
I wanted to avoid priming so I had my local paint shop alodine my entire empenage after it was done. It has a nice gold finish now and I expect it will hold up pretty well. Cost about $250 and took one day.
