Antennas are still black magic to me but is there any requirement to have the transponder cable run a certain length for optimal signal transmission? Or is the signal quality all based on antenna length?

Coax cable length should be minimized for the
lengths commonly used in light aircraft, both type
of cable and variability in length will have no
observable effect on performance.
