I just returned from OSH.

I have been looking at the 180 hp DeltaHawk Diesel over the past several
years.

See: http://www.deltahawkengines.com

Despite the difficulty of a brand new engine, I feel the benefits of this
diesel are too numerous to overlook. It will pay for itself by the time a
Lycoming is due for an overhaul. This forecast was made with last years fuel
prices.

I spoke with both DeltaHawk and Curt LoPresti of LoPresti Speed Merchants
<http://www.speedmods.com> about LoPresti designing both an engine mount and
cowl for the RV-8. If I can get a sufficient number of builders interested
in the DeltaHawk engine, LoPresti has agreed to design an engine mount and
Cowl.

One of LoPrestiıs concerns about getting into the homebuilt market is that
it is very easy to rip off a design for a cowl or fairing. A production
engine would need an STCıd design. Selling only firewall forward kits might
help solve this problem. Any other ideas?

MT has a constant speed propeller on the DeltaHawk Velocity. Aero Composites
<http://www.aerocomposites.com> will be supplying a test propeller shortly.

I am hoping to get some support from Vanıs in identifying builders who might
be interested in taking the plunge, but as you may know, Van has not been
too supportive of alternative engines.

I have also spoken with DeltaHawk about starting a Yahoo Group for their
engines.

Should there be sufficient interest to proceed with this program I will
visit DeltaHawk for a first hand view of their engine and its progress. The
180 hp engine will be perfect for the RV-8/A. A properly designed cowl
should yield additional speed or economies. I donıt think that there is a
better design company than LoPresti.

As a back up, I also spoke with Sam James. He said that they were very busy,
but he would talk with me. His location is not too far from me, nor is
LoPresti for that matter.

Iıd also appreciate any ideas in getting this word out to RV builders. I may
be that RV 7 and 9 builders could also benefit from this program.

I spent some time talking to them, also. If they will ever have a little
zen moment of enlightenment & realize that they've got to beat the Lyc
price point to sell any volume, they will likely sell a lot of engines.
(No government money involvement is an encouraging sign.)

I'm building a -7. Motor mount & cooling system are much bigger concerns
to me than the custom cowl.

If you aren't too far along, keep an eye on Mistral. they are pretty far
along in the certification process on a Wankel (Mazda) rotary, & intend
to build a spark assisted diesel version after certification is
completed on the gas version.

Whew! Talk about price point!

I love the whole idea of an aviation rotary, but last time I looked, weren't
they asking $29,000 or so? (Oops...$31,500 for the 190 hp.) Same reason I
gave up my delivery position for the $19,000 DeltaHawk which in the event
turned out to be $29,000. Finally bought an ECI O-360 from Mattituck for
$18k.

I have been talking to them for 5 years. Promises, promises, Promises,,, They have a great idea and the potential for a new powerplant is right on thier doorstep. They just can't seem to figure out how to open that door. After hearing, "next month" for years now my bets are they will deliver engines to customers in 2012, Maybe........................

Martin,

Just a thought since your in the home build world with the RV, why don't
you do the engine mount and fairings yourself. I am an IE and work with
many local engineers to over come design issues all the time. You would
find that you could do this for much less and in most cases get a better
product. And use that idea of ripe off as it relates to design
information. The first thing I would do is get the drawings of the
Diamond aircraft engine mount and redesign it for the RV. Look at why
and how they did what they did and reverse engineer it, it's not that
hard. As far as the fairings/cowling and as a composite home builder,
these are very easy thing to make and design using what is out there as
a base model.

Just an idea,

Mike L

Ya still need the Deltahawk engine............................ If it ever gets delivered can you imagine getting replacement parts for it. This is the main reason I created a firewall forward installation using a V-8 Ford for my 801. It was not easy but it was "educational" <G>
