My name is Gird Astor McCarty. My friends call me0 Mac. I am 70 years old and recently retired from the Department of Veterans0 Affairs where I practiced Dentistry. I am building a home and hangar on Hensley0 Air Park in Chuckey, TN. I have completed the tail feathers and have ordered the0 quick build kit. Living in Tennessee I know that I will have to pay sales tax on0 this purchase. My question is how is this done in a timely fashion to prevent0 any nasty notes from state. If anyone who has gone through this0 process and knows the drill would please contact me at mac11hsd(at)earthlink I would be most0 appreciative. I read the RV9-list & RVSouthEast-list daily and really enjoy0 them.
Thanks in advance,
  0 Mac

Welcome to the RV community.

I don't know if this will help, but Oregon has NO sales tax.

So a couple questions come to mind:

Are you sure TN can enforce a sales tax on something purchased thru interstate commerce and purchased out of state? How would the state even know about it?

Hi Mac,
Welcome to the world of RV builders. I hope your
experiance is as rewarding as mine has been. I spent
3 years building my standard kit RV-9 taildragger.
First flight was FEb 04 and now at 280 hours the bird
is still a joy.
I'm in Ca where we have an 8% sales tax and we also
have county use tax. The state is somewhat vague. If
you buy a vehicle (car truck airplane whatever) out of
state and bring immediately to Ca they will send you a
tax bill for it. You can however, register it out of
state, leave it out of state for a period of time and
then bring it to CA and avoid the sales tax. I just
didn't say anything to state people and have not been
taxed.
Our county however is a little more aggressive. They
come to the airport once a year, check the registry of
airplanes on the field and then send you a tax bill.
The only thing you can negotiate is the appraised
value of the airplane. I called the appraiser's office
before first flight and talked to them. They asked me
to send them a cost of building figure. I sent them
copies of the invoice from Van's for the 3 main kits,
Empennage, wing and fuselage. That totals around
20,000. they accepted that and have taxed me
accordingly.
I guess after all this rambling my advice would be to
talk to the local tax people before they talk to you,
but know as much as you can before doing so. Do you
have a tax person, financial adviser, accountant or
whatever? Talk to them or just ask around your area
for a tax adviser, make an appointment and see what
they have to say. A few bucks spent finding the real
info might pay off in the long run.
