Bob,
Thanks for the details on this charger/maintainer.
It's always great to have real data results.
It would be very nice if there was some way to verify if the pulse phase is or can do any real improvements in the cells.

I renewed an acquaintance with Isidor Buchmann of
Battery University a few weeks ago to see if the
battery repair/desulfating issues had become more
realistic since we talked last . . . about 15
years ago! Here was his reply . . .

Bob,

There was so much written of sulfation but no one has a simple
solution. We are working with military organizations to also
get a better insight into dormant lead acid batteries. Universities
are also working on sulfation reversal. It is possible but not
always practical.

Please see also: https://batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-804b-sulfation-and-how-to-prevent-it

Good luck and best wishes,

Isidor Buchmann| CEO

A few years back, I did an exhaustive patent search
on battery recovery/desulfation processes and
technologies. The common thread across the study
was that there was NO common thread. Every
patent had it's own formula for battery
salvation. Similarly, there have been countless
articles on the 'net and in particular youtube
highlighting a constellation of repair/recovery
techniques.

Given the ever rising costs of new l-a and svla
batteries, you would wonder why a whole new
industry has not evolved around the salvage
of batteries slated to recycling.

As the article cited above states, the best
protocol for battery desulfation issues is
to prevent/retard it in the first place. I've
suggested that batteries are very much like
houseplants. Well cared for they will thrive;
neglect them and . . . well . . .

Hi Bob,

About the YONHAN charger-maintainer. . .Â
After it steps into the maintainer mode cycle does it stay
there or does it go to an Off mode after a certain time period..?

EXCELLENT question . . .

I just went out to the shop to find that the
recharge after 'crank test' had been terminated
for some time. (I was out of town today)

The charger displayed OFF. No output was detectable
from the charger and the voltage was falling very
slightly and slowly to what I presume will be the
open-circuit resting voltage for this specimen.

Without disconnecting the charger, I performed a
cranking test . . . ran out of oompf in the load
bank . . . could only drag it down to 9.5v at
700+ amps.

After the test, the charger remained in the OFF
condition. After a minute or so, I cycled through
the modes and it woke up to initiate a recharge
activity.

I'll let it go to completion again . . . shouldn't
take long to complete with so short a discharge
event.

Reading some of the details, it seems to have an Off mode option which on a maintainer seems odd.
If it does have an Off mode, then it must have some sense circuitry to tell it when to switch back on and run the whole scenario again.

At first blush, it appears to have IGNORED a
significant discharge event and failed to initiate
a recovery. We'll explore this further but while
the product performs as a capable charger,
it did not step up to the plate as a MAINTAINER.

Thanks for the question!

YONHAN Charger/Maintainer
Does it switch OFF..?

Bob,
Good news on this device...
After attaching these chargers to 2 cars and letting them run for 10+ days...the units do not switch to an OFF position.
After the units go through their several charging steps, the display displays "FUL".
The display remains with this FUL indication. And checking the batteries, they are indeed in an active Float condition of about 13.6 to 13.7 volts....
Thus far, I would recommend this brand of charger. I bought mine for about $23...

Good data sir! I'm discovering some things about
these chargers too. A bit tied up with finalizing
the prototype run on the new crowbar OVM. Will
have some more to share on the chargers soon.

The price is certainly attractive! I've handed
out a couple to neighbors and have two here
in the shop on which I'm gathering plot data
