Heavy port wing today; couldn't let go of the stick for any great length of time.

There was a bead of ice the size of a small half pea at about 3/4 span and 50% chord, which had dripped down from the hangar ceiling and formed a sort of frozen small stalagmite.
Didn't know the wing could be that sensitive. Something to check for next time on a freezing day.

Duncan,

Are you sure it wasn't a few kg of frozen water in that wing?

GIPOD is very sensitive to lateral balance, maybe too much Xmas turkey (or veggiechick)?

Duncan,
In my Vortex Generator tests and more recently the stall tests with different sized leading edge stall strips I found the plane to react quite differently with any significant change.

In tuft testing, placing tape and tufts at the 50% chord point significantly changed the deep stall and cruise trim characteristics.

Another really annoying thing is for those who built their ailerons true to design and have a slight concave surface on the aileron upper side, any water or frost still on the aft trailing edge is noticed in trim. I use a #10 wood pencil or soda straw for initial trimming simply taped as a ramp to the aileron. It is amazing what a small amount of change as a 4 inch tab can affect roll trim.

I had 12AY down for a month after a local Instructor pilot flew my plane on a short cross country and reported back that it too an annoying amount of rudder to keep it straight.

I checked everything. It appears the plane was left outside in a strong thunderstorm and the rudder was banging around which caused a slack rudder cable turnbuckle to flip the cable thimble around which shortened one cable about 1/2 inch.

If it was water in the wing, then it will be permanent!
It's also annoying that when the cold-soaked aircraft is dragged out from the cold hangar, water then condenses and freezes on the wing surface a very fine hoar. That's happened before, but makes no difference to trim; so the boundary layer thickness is between that and the size of half a pea.
