Good morning Tony,
Are you building the mono, trigear, or conventional gear?
I have a conventional gear and simply covered both sides, top, and rear of the wheel well in 22 gauge stainless then sealed all the corners and edges with a fireproof sealant. Allows for working room in a tight space.
Are you following the Jabiru websites? If your engine has not been installed yet, there are some SB’s that would be easy to carryout with the engine on a hoist rather than installed.
The cooling mods perfected by Bud Yerly have done wonders for the early issues with the Jabiru. I taxi without any fear of overheating the engine. And I’m sure you’ve heard of the desert heat we have here in the summer?

I'm at a point of installing my Jabiru engine and note that the Builders Manual in section 31 calls for the construction of a fire-proof barrier that is fitted to the landing gear frame.

I made a cardboard cutout as per the drawings in my manual only to find out that the drawing appear to be only for the Rotax installation and does not fit my Jabiru engine frame. So....Im wondering what other Europa builder who have Jabiru engines have done?

It appears to me that the Jabiru engine would site between the mounts and protrude further back than the Rotax. Therefore Im at a loss on how to proceed.

Any help for experienced builders would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Tony

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I’m building a conventional landing gear Europa.

All the SB’s on the engine have already been carried out.

With regard to your firewall, just confirming you covered all the phenolic firewall with stainless steel? How did you fasten the sheets - was it riveted?

When you used the fire resistant compound at the edges, did you bend the edges to provide more area for the compound to adhere?

Thanks again for your advice Mike.

Good morning Tony,
I covered the“inside” wheel well area with stainless. I did bend the corners for some overlap and filled in with the fire resistant chalk. I attached each of the fourpanels with a small spacer behind and AN bolts and nuts.I pulled a few pix from my build log. The first one shows the“original” style firewall. But this is designed for the monowheel. The second picture just barely shows how I decided to just cover the rear, top, and two sidewalls with stainless. The next pix was my first attempt to cover the rear wall, but my next iteration has the curved edges for a better seal. Thenext pix shows the Mod 72 inserts placed into the top engine mount joints. Notice they are missing from the second pix. With the latest concern of two Europas having found joint cracks in the lower joints (the joints in the second pix. lower crossbar, outside of the two dark bands, I have posed a question on the Forum as to whether a Mod 72 type fix would help in this issue. Have to wait for the powers that be to come back with answers. During the final assembly, after installing the lower cowl, I had to cut open the section below the landing gear frame to assist in the cooling. I even manufacturered (well Bud did) a duct between the oil cooler and the exhaust pipes and crafted a lower exit ramp to increase the airflow because of the Jabiru’s tendency to get too hot. The last pix just shows the ramp under the lower cowl.
Was wondering which gear legs you went with? I used Bob Berube’s style as shown in thenext pix.
Also, have you heard or seen pix of the fuel tank bulging when you have it full and the outside temps are hot? There have been reports of the tank bulging in different areas of the tank. Mine bulged significantly on it’s front wall, in between the support spacers that provide tank support from the seat back to the tank’s front wall. It pooched out so much that it started to rub against the aileron cross bar located directly behind the spars, when the wings are fitted. While bulging seems to be an acceptable problem, if it interferes with any control connectors, then a fix would need to be done. Depending on where you are on your build, getting at a suspect area might be easier now than later.
Hopefully this helps prevent any problems. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Good morning Mike,

Thank you for the additional information and pictures which were most helpful. I too have the Bob Berube’s landing gear. Your images are detailed and I think I can replicate what you have done. Your support is much appreciated.

Knowing that I'm not the first builder that has had to resolve this problem makes me feel more confident to tackle the issue.

I'll be in the USA later this week to enjoy your much cooler temperatures - a relief from the hot temperatures here in Australia.

Thanks once again.

Regards,
Tony
