Dear forum members,

My mono landing gear swing arm is done and I wanted to install it in the airplane. Looking at the manual I see the part about drilling the bolt heads. Yikes! That is something I really don't look forward to doing, with images in my brain of breaking tiny drill bits and having to order more bolts, etc.

Does anyone remember if that was a pain to do, with a multitude of broken and stuck drill bits and the like? or are the bolts actually soft and not a big deal to drill?

Not to gripe but I really wonder why couldn't Europa supply pre-drilled bolts with the kits Evil or Very Mad

Chris

Chris,

This can be done with care if you wish.

It can be a PITA with little broken bits and unusable bolts.

Unless you feel you really need to learn how to drill bolt heads, order the drilled head version from Aircraft Spruce or other vendor.

Not "Evil or Very Mad," just cheep.

Same with antennas. Unless you feel the need to learn how to build and tune an antenna just buy one. Quicker, easier and, when all is said and done, probably less expensive.

Just my 2¢, YMMV.

Chris,
Buy the drilled head AN bolts and save the aggravation.

AAE antennas: I have installed many. I put them in the vertical fin and have put them on the stern post as well as just behind the baggage bay. All have worked well.
Don’t cut the AAE or anything, they work right out of the box.

Technique, if putting on the aft side of the stern post, and cutting a hole into the post for the coil, make sure the rudder clears.

Personally I put them on the inboard skin of the port side of the fin and simply cut a notch in the ribs to clear the antenna. Run the coax through a couple of grommets and leave it alone after glue up. Since the antenna doesn’t fail, but anything can, a simple access hole in the fin can provide access or I just will cut a hole (premarked for the client if necessary) between the mid and top rib and reach in and unplug the coax connector if for some reason my BNC connector failed.

Thanks for the Reply guys.

First, let me assure you I will buy the bolts if I find them. Those bolts are 5/16-18 and 2 1/4 inch long. I didn't find that size at ASC. The only drilled head bolts I found are AN75A-21 or MS20074-05-21. I will look more for them to see if I can find the four I need.

Regarding the antenna, I will follow your advice Bud and bond it to the fin. i assume you use the right angle connector version, is that right?

And don't worry, I'm not cutting it. AAE clearly states not to mess with their antenna Smile

A comment on drilling the bolts, if you do choose to. I found that it was far easier if using a cutting lubricant – brand I use is Rocol (ROC53020 RTD). I found this out when drilling my bolts, and have since used the compound whenever I drill metal, and it is far, far easier. One tube also goes a long way.
