We had a problem with the carb bowl gaskets leaking after having the carbs rebuilt by a Rotax repair shop. The gasket P/N 830 727 has changed over the years. The gasket supplied when the carbs were rebuilt in the summer of 2016 must be allowed to expand to seal properly. The maintenance manuals do not have instructions for this. The manual does specify the torque is 48.7 in lbs.

Lockwood's procedure is to soak the gasket in gasoline for 4 hours, install and torque. Return in 24 hours and recheck the bolt's torque.

Roger Lee says to use white grease. Lead Edge Airfoils says the only approved lube is lithium grease. Both say it is necessary to re check the bolt torque after a few hours.

In our case we soaked the gaskets per Lockwood instructions and used a light coating of "fuel-lube". Roughly 6 hours after install we checked the bolts and had to retighten. Re checked again after 24 hours and they had not loosened. The carbs have performed properly up to 16000 ft since.

I have never soaked mine and just rubbed them down well with White Lithium Grease on the edges and face. No globs. I've never had a leak. I can replace my gaskets then and there. If you have to soak them that takes hours. White Lithium grease is compatible with oil and fuel and should be what you use on "O" rings.

Roger,

I think the float bowl seal required for a 914 carb is more critical than that on a 912. On a 912 the float bowl is vented to atmosphere. On a 914 the bowl is pressurized and any leak will cause a problem, especially when flown at high altitude (over 12000 ft density). There have been 2 or 3 variations in float bowl gaskets over the years. The current gaskets seem to compress after installation and require that the bolt be re-tightened.

I was stranded in Santa Fe, NM last Fall. The problem was leaking float bowls. I could see the fuel stain in the drip trays. I had a new set of gaskets and we changed them. We just rubbed the new ones with Fuel Lube and installed. The new ones leaked immediately. We then talked to Lockwood and learned of the soaking procedure. We got another set of gaskets and installed them following Lockwood's instructions. Re-tightened them after 6 hours and checked them again after 24 hours. Then we flew the plane and have had no further problem.
