My battery seems to have given up. It's a Concorde RG380E/44 installed in 1998. Looking to replace I see the Gill G6381E is about half the cost and I've read some are using the Gill G50E about half the cost again. The Concorde battery is expensive and large but has been reliable. It is located in the right nose where I think the IFF was. The weight is required for CG. I self-start, no APU. My battery tender says not for use with Gill batteries, what's the difference? Any recommendations or thoughts would be appreciated.

Batteries plus
2 big 1025 CCA 12 volt batteries
Or the odysse batteries. two of them fit in the battery box. (925’s)
2 Sears die hard batteries fit on top as well without battery box.

couple hundred bucks total.

Thanks, the battery box was converted into a tool box. I also need the 80lbs. I have to go out to the airplane and look at it. The Odysseys work great! I have just replaced my first two after 7 years of service and only replaced them because I was sure they would fail eventually. I still use them in non-aviation related uses. Six of them will start MiG-15/17 without much of a problem.
 
I am surprised at your W&B issue. I am assuming there are no balance plates in the tail fairing remaining?

Hi Bill.
Maybe I'm missing something. My battery weight 80lbs plus I have 65lbs of lead in the nose to keep CG. With 40lbs in the nose the nose wheel barely stayed on the ground. It may be a manufacturer configuration difference based on the air force it was originally flying in. Mine is a Czech Air Force “C†model, has no plates in the tail cone (just bolts like yours) and can be picked up by the nose when under 200 L very easily. I would have to defer to the list on this one, (Bill Geipels) I would not have thought they would be that different in W&B.

You could put in multiple sets of batteries. if you have lead installed it might as well be a working battery rather than just dead weight. My MiG-15 UTI had the same problem, I put in 8 in the gun bay just to get rid of the dead batteries the last group had installed as ballast. The start is better/faster and the less voltage drop you have, the longer the starter motor will last.

What else have you removed? I removed everything, 425 pounds. I have 103 lbs in the nose area.If you use the 2 big auto batteries, they weigh enough that it won’t matter. If you go with odysseys it wouldn’t be a big enough change to really notice assuming everything else is in order.
My takeoff trim is approximately 0. At high speed I use a lot of nose down. I did use the Gill for years until it died. Now I spend $200 instead of $2,000.

I am surprised at your W&B issue. I am assuming there are no balance plates in the tail fairing remaining?

Thanks, the battery box was converted into a tool box. I also need the 80lbs. I have to go out to the airplane and look at it.

my empty weight is 4905. The Viper weighs the same as the stock engine but sits 18” aft of the stock engine.
So W&B was a big change.

This is interesting, I originally had 103lbs of lead in the nose plus the heavy Concorde batter that just died see (xls sheet 1) and everything that could be removed I think was removed. In this configuration the nose gear was almost collapsed as it sat on the ramp. I played with the W&B and with 65lbs removed the plane would sit very tail low and cruise was 3+ degrees forward, with 38lbs removed as it is today (xls sheet 4) my trim is 2-2.5 deg forward in cruise and the plane sits level. My empty weight is 5155lbs. xls sheet 3 is my current W&B in mm for those who don't use inches.

Odyssey PC925's.. I used 2 in stock battery box. Awesome.. I use the same in my T-33's... But 4 or 6 of them. Best bang for the dollar for sure

If running batteries in series, what wire gauge for the interconnect, pos/neg leads? If your starting a viper how many amps are you seeing? The 701 is about <400.

I have mine connected by automotive battery connectors that are very thick. Don't know the gauge. Can be obtained at any auto supply shop. I don't have a viper.
