Hi,
Has anyone installed fuel tank tabs to allow for accurate partial filling of the fuel tanks? I believe Piper uses these on the Cherokee. If you have, how long are they, what material did you use and where did you anchor them?
I guess I should also introduce myself. My name is Vern Smith and am building a standard kit # 40324. My son and I are just finishing the flaps and are going back to the fuel tanks that we skipped over. Power will be an overhauled Lycoming IO-540 C4B5. Currently I rent a C-182.

I don't think this is a bad idea, but I'm not sure how workable
it would be. I find that the very small filler neck opening
would make it harder to see very well, and the fact that the
-10's tanks are fairly long would mean that it wouldn't be too
long before tabs out on the outboard end would be pretty
low, but still have a fair amount of fuel left. I'm not saying
it's not worth doing, but, IMHO, if you have the combination
of fuel gauges and use an EIS with a totalizer, it should be
something that wouldn't be too relevant anymore.

I agree with Tim. Warriors need tabs in the tanks because you can't
regularly fill them all the way up without having gross weight issues if
you want to haul more than 2 people . . .

I put these on my Super 8 with 60 gallon tanks.
One thing I did was make the tab removable. In the place of one rivet holding the tank flange in, I put a #8 screw and have the tab holding the platenut. So I could replace the tab if I did not like the height.
Tab is about 3” down and gives me 20 gal/side.
Frankly I never use the darn thing. But the thought is good.

What about the good old dip stick? When flying Katana's, we used a measured
stick to verify the gauges. One could fill an empty RV-10 tank with known
quantities (parked on level ground, of course) and mark the stick (or the
acrylic rods that are available) accordingly. Or, as for the C-182Q I used
to fly, use the bottom of the filler tube as your tab mark. The Arrow I
used to fly had very nice tabs that came in handy on those hot summer days,
so it would be nice to have such. Boy, there are a lot of "used to fly's"
in the message. Got to get my bird built.
