Here is a much needed news flash.

Today two pilots entered an experimental Zenith 601XL airplane powered by a Corvair 2700 engine, left the ground, and had a safe flight which included 3 intentional landings and about an hour or so of flying. The amazing thing is the Zodiac Canopy remained latched (original design), the wings also remained in their original design location and the engine purred like a kitten. At no time did we fly beyond the maneuvering speed of the aircraft

I want to publicly thank Dr. Gary Ray for a very enjoyable flight and conversation.

This is the very same airplane I am scratch building and it was just what I needed to get me back at it.

Interesting post! I just returned (less than 30 minutes ago) from a 14-hour trip to Southern Indiana in my 601XL/Corvair. There were some 9,000 feet towering clouds I had to go around and I actually went over a wall of them at 10,000 feet! I pegged the altimeter since it only goes to 10K. It was a great trip and the airplane performed just great. I have 106 hours on the airplane and engine now. I stopped in Hannibal, MO, Centerville, IA, Schenk, IA, Robinson, IL, Orleans, IN, and some other little airports in the Midwest. I met some nice folks.

I'm uploading a video to Youtube.com right now that should be available a little later.

Keep building guys - it is a dream come true.

Scott,

How was the climb rate at 10K? I've been wondering what the ceiling will be for the XL Corvair combination.
