Yesterday I was able to fly my 601 for the first time in 2 weeks. I am so proud of that airplane. I just went up for an hour to test out the new exhaust manifolds I installed. It flies like a dream.

The previous flight was a potential disaster. I noticed the EGT went to Zero on my left exhaust bank. I landed and found this:

I spent two weeks fabricating two new exhaust headers out of stainless and now have a much better system:

Flying the 601 is a real treat. If you are not flying yet, keep building. It is worth it.

Scott,

That's a good looking design. And I have questions:

Did you make everything?

What kind of stainless did you use?

What's the wall thickness?

Ron:

I re-used the Carbon Steel stubs I got from William a while back for my first exhaust system. I just grinded them off and reused them.

I ordered the stainless from an on-line exhaust site called Columbia River Mandrel Bending. The bends are described as: 304 Stainless, 3" Legs, 2.5" Radius, .065 Wall. the straight pipe I used was 16 gauge (also .065" w.t.) and also 304 stainless. I ended up having to bend the straight pipe with my HF bender and it wasn't nearly as pretty as the mandrel bent pipe. If I ever have to do this again I'll order some 45 mandrel bends so I don't have to do any hack bending with the HF bender.

It was very nice to weld using stainless rod with my TIG. Overall I am very happy with the new system. It was one of the things I didn't like that much about the engine installation. The other thing was my intake which I recently powder-coated black and it looks a lot cleaner that way. I also checked it real good for leaks before applying the powder.

The Corvair is performing very well and I like the way it is all set up right now.

Thanks Scott,

I have experience section welding headers from the mandrel bent pieces you speak of. I think I might give that a try when I get to that point.

Scott, per William Winn's manual had made some reference to wrapping pipes can promote rust or cause them to crack or something like that. Basically was getting at that the wrap could age them I believe, maybe trap condensation. He said he if he does wrap that he only secures the wrap with hose clamps to he can more easily inspect them.

Yes, William warned me about the wrap verbally and he was right once again as I suspect it was the last straw. Since I started flying there have been a few things I wanted to change. The exhaust was one of those items and I'm very happy with my last iteration of the headers.

The other change was my intake system that I recently cleaned up and powder-coated. Now if I can just find a way to change the weather to something more flyable.

You guys have tons of storms out there this week?

What's the idea behind wrapping pipes again anyway? And how did the moisture get in there in the first place.

I don't think moisture had anything to do with it. It was only wrapped a few hours before it broke. I installed it because my original exhaust was too close to the cowl and it was getting very hot. Part of the fiberglass was turning brown. The new headers are a lot further away from the cowl and everything is cooler now.

When I built my first headers, William was not selling headers - just the stubs. His new headers won't fit my setup anyway because I built my own engine mount. I had to fabricate my own intake and exhaust system because William's parts don't fit my engine mount.

If you are installing a Corvair, buying Williams parts is the way to go. I didn't have that luxury because he was just getting going on the 601 back then. I do have 60 flight hours on my airplane that I may not have if I had waited.

Yes, we are having a lot of rain and wind. N5SL is safely tucked away in a dry hangar thankfully.
