Angle for Useable Fuel and Flow Check

I am to the point in my final assembly where I would like to demonstrate the useable fuel quantity and fuel flow checks. Per the FAA guidelines, they suggest performing this test with the aircraft set to a deck angle of "5 degrees above the highest anticipated climb angle." I e-mailed ZAC for their suggested angle at which to perform this test. I got back a disappointing catch-22 like non-answer. They said the highest angle I am likely to see is the power on stall angle. "Which you will have to find in your flight testing." That was the entire answer, not even a suggestion considering that I cannot do one before the other. Thanks for nothing.

Does anybody who is flying an XL with a Jabiru 3300 have any insight on an appropriate angle to use for this test? At least until I can fly and determine my own results.

Thanks,

David,

I don't have an exact angle to suggest for the fuel system flow check, but I
do highly recommend you do it. Let's hope a XL owner can give you a real
number. As a EAA Tech Counselor I urge every builder I work with to do this
check. It can be a life saver. My guess is to get the nose up to about 25
degrees.

I suggest actually running the engine at take-off power ( not just a fuel
flow check into a container ) for at least a minute or two with minimum fuel
in the tanks with the selector in each position. Just be carefull how you do
this. Don't want anyone to get hurt.

Dave,

If you hold the tail on the ground, it should be suffice, in my opinion. I
believe any difference between this and a higher angle would be minimal. I
have never heard of any problems with the XL/Jab fuel system design.

With the Jab 3300 you have a very high nose attitude at full power at
stall - in fact on my XL/Jab I can never get it to break before my CHTs go
to redline; the airplane just hangs in a stall shudder and I keep the wings
level with rudder.

Also, I have run my tanks dry during Phase I testing to see what would
happen and to check restart of the Jab. On my XL the engine just suddenly
quits, and the engine windmills. Restarts are a non event. I hit the boost
pump, change tanks to one with fuel, and within a few seconds the engine is
again purring.

I believe you will really enjoy flying the XL/Jab. Watch your CHTs.
