Steve:

I just bought a Glasair III with 200 hours. My first kit/home built airplane. Even more so than a certified airplane, get a good pre-buy. I had a cursory pre-buy done (in spite of my better judgement) and now am finding many items that need attention. In the kit built world, the level of durability is much lower than your average certified airplane. Much more has to be tweaked, re-torqued, replaced, and adjusted just to keep it safe. The Glasair is one of the better kits, but even so, I'm finding the durability of a 200 hour airframe to be surprisingly fragile. Remember (especially on composite airplanes) these are custom made, one-off creations, so no two are exactly alike. Further, the expectations of (certified level) build technique should be dampened.

Good luck.

Jeff

Jeff,

I understand your frustration, not all “Composite” airplanes are created equal. You should know that the later variant of homebuilt composite airplanes are more akin to standards of certified like airplanes and in many cases better. But the point you make that these are homebuilt does lent to the fact that they are in fact one offs. I would also challenge you assumption that the “Glassair is one of the better kits.” Don’t confuse kit with airplane, they are very different! I have helped build two Glassairs and find by today’s standard the Glassair to be a cruder kit but a fine airplane once the airplane is finished, if build well.

Mike
