Hi all,

I was wondering if there are any 914 drivers out there that some times operate in the 12,000~18,000 feet range.

I am using Penzoil Motor Cycle oil and I suspect that it foams a bit. I was told the Valvoline Dura blend works better at these altitudes.

Any first hand experience would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,

Down on this list somewhere is a post about 20 different oils. Yes some do foam a lot more than others. This is why Rotax made the oil level in the oil tank higher a few years back. If you are using 91 Octane fuel the majority of the time I would recommend Amsoil full synthetic, either
10-40 or 20-50 motorcycle oil. It is the least foaming of all the oils, even Mobile 1.
If you are flying at 10K or higher then I hope you use 100LL as it is more stable and less volatile at high altitude. Then you need a semi synthetic to suspend the lead in 100LL. Golden Spectro 4 is another good choice for the anti-foaming.Here is the link to read about oils and what their properties are. You may have an oil you like, but this just helps in understanding what additives do and what oils seem to do better.
