The powder coating on my old 503 steel muffler really helped it to stay in good shape. My new 912 has a stainless muffler and pipes. Would it be beneficial to powder coat the stainless muffler?

Hi Igold,

Functionally no, but if you like the aesthetics then go for it.

Thom,
Some of my friends with Challengers have their exhaust ceramic coated. Looks
really cool and you can have choices in the color.

I've seen the ceramic coatings and some sort of semi-chrome coatings, both of which last a long time and continue to look good for years. I've just never heard of a "powder coating" paint that could withstand the heat of an exhaust system. That is why I was asking what it was. If had a current need I'd probably go for the ceramic coating.

I regularly see 1450-1470F EGT readings on our 912UL, which is normal for that engine. 2-stroke Rotaxes normally max out at around 1200F. Fortunately, no current need for new coating.

Thom,

The generally described "ceramic coating" is a powder coat process.

Just take a hotter oven than most shops have.
